The high school baseball ranks lost one of its' best yesterday. After a tough 2-0 regional loss to Evanston, Tony Tichy of Niles North resigned.

Tony was an all conference player at Niles North. He went on to play D1 baseball, even playing in the College World Series.

Tony, who has two young daughters, resigned to spend more time with his family. Tony would be at school at 6:00AM and not go back home till after practice or games at 7:30 PM. Tony, who works at NN would spend literally hours a day grooming the field to make it as good as it could be for the players of both teams.

Tony ran camps and clinics, putting whatever proceeds there were back in to the program to provide the kids with the best uniforms and equipement possible. While he gave private lessons to top players such as Jimmy Risi and Sean Kennedy, he would not give private lessons to his own kids. Tony did not want players to feel they had to take lessons from him to play on the team. He also knew that it wan a no win situation. If you took lessons and played, it would be favoritism. If you didn't play, he would be called a lousy coach. Bottom line is the guy has integrity. He was in it for the kids, not the money.

Tony gave all the kids an opportunity to play themselves in or out of the lineup. He did not play favorites. You may have heard parents gripe, but you never heard it from the kids.

Tony will be missed.

Best position player I ever coached!. In two seasons he struck out twice(204 AB's). Led the entire Chicago area in RBI as a Junior with 41.

MVP in the Division II World Series for Missouri Southern. Started in CF for four years at that school and was All Conference 3 years.

Was the finest assistant a coach could have: loyal, honest, knowledgeable and best of all hard working!

I feel he is one of the best coaches in Chicago! There are a lot of coaches who rack up a ton of wins, but they could NEVER coach Tony's team! But he could sure coach their team! Tony got a lot out of very limited talent. Some coaching legends have no idea what Tony had to do, just to be competitive.

Tony is a great hitting coach who is very high demand. Tony is not going away, he is expanding on his private work. I highly recommend Tich as a hitting coach. He is a true technician who knows his stuff like no other.

Class act all the way!

We all come to the conclusion that it is more important to watch your own children grow up, not other people's children. You are making the right move Tich. I am proud to have coached you, coached with you and most of all I am proudest to have you as a friend.
Can't say enough good things about Tony. My son took hitting lessons from Tichy over the winter. The way Tony handles the kids during lessons really builds kids confidence and gets them to understand the mechanics of hitting. We played against him in conference but it never was a factor in his approach. We will continue lessons with Tony in the off season and will miss him during the season.
