I've always wanted to ask you guys this question, but I'm afraid where the topic might lead.
What are some of the rules you wish coaches had a better understanding of? What are some of the more frequent rule misconceptions you hear from coaches?
To try to keep this on topic, I'm not looking for "This one time..." type stories. I'd also like to keep it to high school age groups. We all know that you get some people with no understanding of the rule book in the youth levels so that won't really do us any good here.
I'm really hoping this doesn't turn into coach bashing. Instead I'd love to have an open conversation with out people calling each other idiots where we can find some of the more universally misinterpreted rules.
I wish umpires and coaches worked together a little bit more (not during games -- think off-seasons) instead of an "us vs them" mentality on both sides. I'd love to be able to sit in on state rules meetings to find out how umpires are instructed to handle situations and specific calls.
For example, how many different definitions do you think umps and coaches would give you on what characteristics of a check-swing qualify it as a strike? If coaches knew how umps are taught to see it then I think it would help the relationships between the two slightly.
Thanks!
