Bernie Walter's Winning Edge Coaches Seminar is a dynamic informative coaching clinic by the University of MD Director of Baseball Operations. Coach Walter has been the USA Baseball National HS Director and has also led the USA Baseball Junior National Team three times, and led the 1988 squad to its first world championship. Coach Walter is the winningest Coach in Maryland Public School history and one of the most respected baseball minds in the United States of America!
In 2007, Walter was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame - an honor usually reserved for college coaches. He was just the third coach from Maryland to be inducted into the ABCA Hall, joining Navy's Max Bishop and Tom Kibler of Washington College. He has also led the USA Baseball Junior National Team three times, and led the 1988 squad to its first world championship.
in addition to being inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame, the MSABC HOF, Anne Arundel County Sports HOF, the Old Timers Baseball Association HOF, Baltimore's Boys of Summer HOF and is a 5 Time National Coach of the Year!
Walter won his first state title in just his third year at Arundel HS. His accomplishments, however, do not end at the prep level. Walter coached the Mayo American Legion team in Annapolis for six years, winning four state championships and the 1990 Legion national title. He also coached the legendary Leone's-Johnny's amateur baseball team for 14 years, winning four All-American Amateur Baseball Association titles with the Baltimore team. Coach Walter still coaches the Maryland Monarchs in the summer, an under-18 team, that features many of the Maryland HS Top Prospects and has won numerous NABF World Series Championships over the years.
It was Walter's association with the ABCA and his emergence as one of the nation's premiere high school coaches that earned him a spot on Team USA's coaching and selection staff back in 1986. Two years later, he coached the U.S. Junior National team to its first world championship, beating Cuba in the finals. He coached two teams again in 1990 with rosters that included Atlanta pitcher John Smoltz, San Diego outfielder Ryan Klesko and former Orioles Mike Mussina and Charles Johnson.
He has coached hundreds and hundreds of kids and some like Denny Neagle, have gone on to pitch in the big leagues.
Others continue on to other great accomplishments. For instance, Frank Perreira, who pitched on Walter's first state championship team in 1976, went on to become an All-American at Johns Hopkins University and, later, the chief of dentistry for the U.S. Naval Academy.
During this Coaches Clinic/Seminar, Coach Walter is going to share with us, his baseball knowledge and coaching techniques that gave him his wining edge that we can use immediately to impact our team's success for the upcoming season.
