I am trying to understand the NCAA "contact" guidelines (the ones Nick Saban supposedly violated). My son is an '09 (rising junior) who is playing on an 18U summer team with rising seniors and college freshmen. Many of the upcoming freshman have signed with D1's, so I assume some D1 coaches will be looking at the team at some of the tournaments they are scheduled to attend.

The NCAA D1 Coaches Off Campus Recruiting Guide states that off campus contact can occur July 1 following junior year. So do I need to explain to my son "not to engage in any dialogue in excess of a greeting" (quoting directly from the guide) with any D1 coaches that may see him play? (For example, he'll be at the WWBA 18U, which last year was crawling with D1 coaches.) I am not assuming he's good enough to draw D1 interest, but I want to set his expectations of how this summer will go.

Second question - are there similar guidelines for the other divisions?

If he speaks to a DI, guy it's not the end of the world. The Coach is usually only going to speak to those he KNOWS are of age. Most of the time they are going to speak to the coach anyway. At the DIII level, we can contact players whenever we want, but most of us follow the July 1 guideline anyway! DII i'm unsurey of, and JUCO i'm unsure of, but my guess with JUCO is that they do not have those rules in place, but again not sure.

I'll take a crack at this one and confident someone will correct me if I am wrong. I am not sure there is anything to explain to your son. These rules are for coaches. Your son can talk to whomever he wants whenever he wants. The coaches on the other hand are bound by these rules that dictate when THEY can initiate contact. In our experiences, when a player caught the eye of a recruiter, they (the recruiters) would approach the player's coach and ask what grade level the player was before attempting any contact with the player. Of course, if the player finds out an inquiry is made (from their summer or hs coach), there is nothing preventing them (the player) from contacting the respective school that made the inquiry.
obrady ... the NCAA D1 Coaches Off Campus Recruiting Guide has a column heading "Evaluations and Contacts". It states that the coach has "Seven recruiting opportunities (contacts and evaluations combined) per prospect and not more than three of the seven opportunities may be contacts."

jbbaseball ... the guide says this about phone calls: "Once per week July 1 following junior year."
