I'd like to know what you think of the following scenario. This happened yesterday morning during a college wood bat tournament.

After a bad inning on defense, the coach gathered all his players in front of the dugout and had them all remove their jerseys and hats. He told them he was embarrassed by their play and that he didn't want anybody to know what school they represented (as if everybody in attendance didn't know who they were).

During the next half inning there apparently was a missed sign. The coach yelled from the third base coaches box to the dugout that since they evidently didn't know the signs he would just verbally tell them what to do and they had better do it. For they rest of the game he would yell, hit and run, steal, bunt, etc. After that game he did go back to giving signs but made them play the rest of the tournament without their jerseys or hats.

Thoughts?

First instinct. I would confront him before the AD, Faculty rep, and the team and explain that we were due more respect. Then I would transfer. Regardless of what you would be promised about retaliation, you would forever, while at that school, be a marked man in his eyes. There is satisfaction to stand up for the team, but, you will be penalized. Make sure that you pick your battles well, sometimes the penalty outweighs the gripe.

On the other hand. Maybe he had a point and was fed up with lack of hustle and sloppy play. We can draw conclusions from this short post. But, do we really know the story.

I got on their website this morning to get some information on the program and coach. He's entering his third year at the school and has turned the program around according to the website, they were 33-28 last year. They have been in this same tournament for the last three years, we've played them each year, and I have never seen him do anything like this before. I didn't see the previous two games they played so I don't know if there were factors leading up to what happened in this game. I'd just never seen anything like this happen in the 37 years I've been involved in baseball.
ya know....i just don't get it. Get over it. It is not like the players are trying to screw up. Taking there uniforms and hats doesn't do anything but make you as the coach and the program look bad. As for the missed signs, no excuse. Maybe instead of yelling out the signs, he could replace the player who missed the sign, and put someone else in. Then tell the player, I can't play you if you don't know the signs. Bet he knows the signs the next game. There is no excuse for embarassing players, you can certainly get your point across in more effective ways. You fill out the lineup card!
While I disagree with his tactics, I would have to tell my son that this is nothing but a small bump in the road and go on. Incidents of this nature will always make it to the AD’s office and in my opinion will eventually be addressed by the school’s administration. Play through it for the time being.

That is a bit much. But being embarassed is a matter of opinion. some kids are embarassed if you occassionaly yell at them. I know you can not yell at them when they screw up. You must tell them not to worry about it and pat them on the back as their self esteem will be crushed and they will go into a deep depression and you will ruin their life.
