WEST HAVEN, Conn. - University of New Haven head baseball coach Raphael Cerrato and assistant coach Jeff Hourigan have resigned from their positions at the University effective immediately. Five year head coach, Cerrato has accepted a position as the assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Rhode Island. Hourigan also departs UNH after five years for his alma mater and will become an assistant at the University of Connecticut.
During his five years, Cerrato guided the Chargers to a 131-97 overall record and an 81-55 conference record. He led New Haven to the NCAA tournament in 2010 and in each of his five seasons guided UNH to the conference tournament. In 2008, catcher Michael Moras was drafted in the 20th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft. In his final season with the Chargers, Cerrato coached two-time All-American Mitch Rossi during his pursuit of NCAA Division II’s career saves record. The team was nationally ranked in the top 25 in a number of categories throughout his tenure, including a second place finish in 2010 in team ERA.
Hourigan, the Chargers pitching coach, helped establish New Haven's staff which ranked among the nation’s best during his tenure. In 2010, UNH finished the season ranked second in NCAA Division II with a 2.90 ERA. In 400 innings of work, the staff allowed less than a hit per inning and held opposing batters to a .240 batting average. This season, the Chargers ranked 18th nationally in ERA.
