Lander athletics director Jeff May announced today (7/15/05) that Bill Jarman, Coastal Carolina University’s assistant baseball coach, has been named the Bearcats' head baseball coach effective immediately.
"After conducting a national search which attracted some 100 candidates, we are pleased that Bill Jarman will lead the Lander baseball program," said May. "Coach Jarman is a quality individual and one of the most respected coaches in the game. He has an excellent track record in recruiting top-notch student-athletes.”
Jarman has served at Coastal Carolina as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the past 10 years. Under Jarman, the Chanticleer pitching staff has been among the best in the nation of late, finishing near the top in the nation in earned run average in each of the past six seasons, including seventh in 1999 and eighth in 2002. Over the past five years, his staffs have averaged over 40 wins a season, including a Big South record 50 wins in 2005.
“This is a great opportunity for me,” said Jarman, who received his bachelor’s degree from Wingate University and his master’s from Western Carolina University. “Lander is a very attractive situation with great people to work with. It is an opportunity to be successful. I am just excited to get started.”
Prior to his arrival at Coastal Carolina, Jarman served six years as an assistant at Western Carolina University, where his Catamount staff compiled a 226-137 (.659) overall record.
This past season, three of Coastal's pitchers, Ricky Shefka, Byron Binda and Jake Hurry, were drafted in the 2005 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
