Kaepernick would have been a high draft choice had he stated he was interested in playing pro baseball. But he was adamant he was going to college and pursuing a football career. A team drafted him late in case he changed his mind. Had the negotiations got to a serious point (there weren't any) he would have been offered substantial money to sign a baseball contract.

Well, Perfect Game ranked him 573rd in the nation in his high school graduation year (2006).  My understanding is that few baseball scouts followed him or knew of his preference for football.  Also, he only had one football scholarship offer--Reno--and they had never seen him play football.  They offered after a coach saw him in a basketball game.  He was an excellent athlete, but not skilled in baseball or football.

So I think it is quite a stretch to believe that he would have been drafted high, or would have been offered much of a contract had he decided to sign from his actual draft round.

I was going on what I heard about his baseball potential watching a 49ers football game.  The announcers went on and on about him being a top baseball prospect, having a much better chance at baseball over football and being a potential high baseball draft choice out of high school. I assumed they got their information somewhere rather than it being a bunch of hyperbole.
