Hi guys,

I am a senior in high school and I am attending a division 3 college next year. I was wondering if anyone could give some insight or help for walking on. I watched the college play and they were pretty good, but not great.

I am very nervous because I feel like I will be unprepared for the tryouts. I go to a division 4 high school with coaches that are not very good (I'm being nice). I started pitching this year due to the lack of pitchers on my team. I had played third base, previous to pitching, so my arm was pretty strong. I throw around 81-84 mph, but I am only comfortable with fastballs (mainly 4 seam) and curveballs.

I consider myself a better hitter than pitcher. I am more of a line-drive hitter, but I can also hit the ball over the fence.

I really don't know what I should do, or how I should approach walking on. I don't want to be laughed off the field or anything because I feel really unknowledgeable when it comes to drills any whatnot. Are there certain things to expect? Hitting drills, fielding drills, pitching drills? Please, please, please give me some advice so I don't make a fool out of myself during tryouts. I don't really want to be asking the coach these questions because I don't want to make a bad first impression.

Thanks!!

Hi Alex and welcome to the site. Also, congratulations on beginning your college experience. Regarding your walk-on efforts, I think you unknowingly answered your own questions. Preparation is crucial. You will want to know as much as possible about the program and how you may fit. Let me ask you a few questions...

Have you had any contact with the coach or recruiting coordinator? Does the coach know you will be trying to walk on? Aside from watching the team play, what makes you think you can make the team? Will you be playing any summer college ball or other high-level summer ball that will further prepare you to make a college team? Are you familiar with this program's conditioning program? Will you be on a conditioning regimen prior to fall tryouts? Is your class schedule set up to accomodate your efforts to make the baseball team? Have you had your skills evaluated by a qualified third party instructor or scout? What is the best travel team you've played for like? Is this a California D3?

Once you answer these questions, the folks here at HSBBW will be in a much better position to give you good advice.
