It was due to the pandemic.

It looks like it is a new thing giving these pandemic players more advantages. Really sad made it easy for a lot of bad players to keep hanging around.
My son, who is at a D3, has a teammate who is playing in his 6th year. He now has a full time job so he only plays in the weekend and some home week night games.
2020 didn't count for eligibility for anyone. In 2021, some D3 schools didn't play at all, and some played about half a schedule. I think that's why they said that year didn't count for eligibility either. I can see some schools that did play a full 40-game season in 2021, but still have 5- and 6-year players on their rosters (such as in this example). But 2021 was probably an abnormal season.
