My son just committed to a D1 to pitch for next year!  He didn't take typical path to a D1 from high school, instead went to a D2 school freshman year (where he was red-shirted), then this season to an excellent JUCO.

The great advise on this board has been a tremendous help in not only making sure he fulfilled the requirements to go 4-2-4, but also in finding the right school for him.  We made a mistake out of high school by picking a baseball program for all the wrong reasons, instead of picking a school that was right for him first and then looking for a great baseball program second.

Great story and advice for all of us.  Unless a kid has professional potential (few do), it always has to be school first and then baseball and then let the chips fall where they may.  Glad it worked out where your son still wound up in D1--it seems more go the other way where they went D1 for the baseball and the school did not work.

Make sure that all of your players credits transfer and that he has enough credit hours to be eligible to play. Do not rely on the school to make sure he is eligible. I know of quite a few players that transfer too many times and can't play because of GPA or not enough credit hours towards graduation.

Sometimes these alternate paths can hurt when the player transfers.

Transferring is always an option. But an important question in the recruiting process is ... "If baseball is taken out of the equation would I want to be here?"

As important as baseball is to the decision there's more going on. Academics are important. Social and cultural fit are important. It's hard to perform if you're unhappy overall.

You nailed it RJM. You have to make sure everything outside of baseball is right for you and you are happy with it. If you aren't, one of the first things that suffers is on field performance.

TPM - luckily there are guys like Rick on here that you can call! Anyone ever looking to transfer should always talk to Rick first, no one knows better than him

I've never cared for this contrafactual decision aid.

Any factor that matters when you choose a college could get taken out of the equation: choice of major, availability of funds, whatever. If it does, one can re-evaluate at that time.
