I just heard from son.  He told me his November schedule. I had thought once fall ball was over things would slow down a bit. They still have something scheduled 6 day a week. Can you tell me what your players schedules look like for the rest of the semester. I am really just curious as I am new to this and just wondering what is the norm.

Thanks

Guess it depends on division, and school facilities. At sons  D1-they are restricted to number of hrs they can be w HC, so now it's sm group specific position practices/hitting. Weights don't count in that, so they meet w strength trainer a few times a wk. P are shutting down for awhile. After Thanksgiving they r getting a break to concentrate on finals, and will pick up again as team after Christmas. Son plans to work out at Y when home. P will return early.

They r also required so many hrs per wk at study hall, so that is more scheduled time related to baseball. Son is having fun, but shying away from partying, not his thing. Had a trainer tell group once that one night of bing drinking sets u back about a wk to 10 days w training. Basically he was saying it has such a negative effect on body don't do it, esp during season. Also, sleep is best thing for athlete, helps repair body. Hard to do every night in college.

Very similar to others.  D2.  Just finished baseball activities yesterday.  Starts six days a week at 7am.  Three are weights, two are running/speed/agility, one is running dunes.  Additionally, two days a week small group position specific work and one or two days of yoga.  Pitchers are on a similar but slightly different program.

Official  D1 fall baseball can encompass a maximum of o 45 consecutive days with guys being able to practice for up to 20 hrs per week and 4 hours per day, with only one required off day per week.    D3 fall ball can consist of no more than 16 practices and one day of competition spread over five weeks, with no more than 4 days of practice in any one week.

Those are the official, mandatory, coach led events.

The rest is "voluntary."    Still, the coaches are not allowed even to know who did or did not attend these voluntary events.  And attendance cannot be used to determine who does and does not make the team, as I understand it.   These rules are designed to protect student athletes from undue pressure to become full time athletes rather than full time students.

But still,  I think voluntary conditioning is voluntary in name only.  If you don't put the work in, it will show and you won't  make the grade.

Thank you all for your info. My son is at a D1. I  just remember hearing that they were restricted somehow in the fall. Son forwarded me his schedule and it said mandatory on all of it. Although had it said voluntary, I would take that as mandatory anyway. Of course mostly all of it consists of weight room, conditioning, yoga, and meeting with the pitching coach 2x a week in addition to study hall. He's not complaining, just in my head I had assumed that things would not be as scheduled as it was. Still learning.

So do they typically return to campus earlier than the other students for the Spring semester?

Thanks

Are there really players who do not come to "voluntary " workouts or is it just listed that way?

I think everyone is expected to do the lifting. The S&A training is run by a private PT specifically for the team. I think 10 guys are doing that. Captains practices are encouraged (by teammates) but not closely audited.

baseballmom, for what it's worth, if your son's D1 team is outside the 45-day period that SluggerDad mentioned, here's the rule that's applicable to his team:

"Outside the playing season during the academic year, all countable athletically related activities are prohibited during two calendar days per week."  This would not include study hall or academic meetings, but anything related to skill instruction, practices, conditioning, etc.
