TPM please dont take this wrong because you are one of my favorites - but: I want it simple. I want to see a baseball game. I want to watch the infielders arms between innings. I want to watch the outfielders throw between innings. I want to see the catcher fire it down on the last pitch. I want to see a baseball game. I dont want to see two guys dressed up in Sumo suits push each other down. People run around the bases between innings. YMCA sung and people acting like fools. Dance teams and step teams performing between innings. ETC ETC ETC. It is one reason I dont go to the see the Durham Bulls play very often. Its not even about the game to over half the people in attendance. How much beer can you drink and how many boards can some karate guy break between the fifth and sixth innings. I love it the old fashioned way. Just give me the ballgame the way it was supposed to be played by guys that play it the way its supposed to be played. I guess Im just Old School.

... including the part about TPM. Smile
The Milwaukee Brewer Sausage race is part of a Milw game. However, the I've heard the State of WI is questionng the leagality because of the "bleacher betting" that goes with it, and that it's been added to the OTB menu.

On July 9, 2003, in a misguided attempt at humor, Randall Simon, then the first baseman of the Pittsburgh Pirates, playfully hit a top-heavy sausage on its head with a baseball bat. The tap didn't hit the human head of Mandy Block who was wearing the Italian Sausage costume, but it did knock her over, and she took the Hot Dog down with her. The Polish Sausage helped the Italian Sausage up and all sausages finished the Race. Simon was arrested and paid a fine, and was suspended by Major League Baseball for three games. He later apologized. Block asked only that the offending bat be autographed and given to her. Simon obliged. Since that incident, T-shirts and other propaganda popped up with the now infamous words, "Don't whack our weiner!"

Coach May,
I understand completely, if you read my last post. I left out something in my first post.

I don't like the hoopla either, but I do like some football traditions. Smile

Traditions help associate one with their college roots. For example, the touching of Howard's rock and running down the hill at Clemson. Or the marching band at Ohio State.

I am not into most of the tailgating traditions. Eek

I like the traditions too, TPM. Especially the Ohio State band last January Big Grin

If anyone ever gets a chance, you should take a trip to the World Baseball Classic next time it comes around. We saw Dominican v. Venezuela, and Venezuela v. Italy. It was a blast! Yes, there was a guy who had a flask shaped like binoculars, and every time he "looked" through them he took a sip, and yes, some guy came into the Dominican game wearing an A-Rod jersey and got booed soundly, but with good humor. These folks were crazy about baseball and cheered for their guys with everything they had. It was electric, and one of the most fun baseball experiences we've ever had.

And...it was all about the baseball. No between inning entertainment was necessary. The crowd was entertaining enough!
Does Miami's tradition including The Walk from the jail and The Removal Of The Handcuffs as the players enter the stadium?

I like the pregame pagentry of college football. I believe I mentioned Clemson's entrance in a post last week. I was watching the beginning of the game at the time. The best entrance is the Army-Navy game. It's far from the most theatrical, but it's special. It wouldn't be a UCLA-SC football game without waving dollar bills at SC and chanting "safety school" (outside of sports) at them. That's good, clean abuse.

I wonder why high schools don't have bands at baseball games.

They could play between half innings and when their team scores.

Maybe cheerleaders too.

.

Your just kidding, I hope
Vanderbilt has cheerleaders. It's a little less outgoing than football and basketball. I've seen them in the aisles on TV and their webcasts between innings.
Bullwinkle’s top ten baseball traditions!

10) Triples
9) Head first slides at home
8) Seventh Inning Stretch
7) Star Spangled banner prior to game
6) Day games and bikini tops.
5) Hot Dog (mustard only) seeds (eat spit and be happy) and a beer.
4) Not washing uniforms/jock strap during hot streak
3) The hot foot
2) Bubble gum bubble attached to teammates hat
1) Adjusting cup and spitting at the same time.

I agree with Coach May's post about what he wants to do at a ballgame. I was in Chicago this summer and saw two games at Wrigley and one game at White Sox. I have to say I didn't realize how great Wrigley was until I sat through the dinner and show the White Sox put on.

At Wrigley I sat there and watched two great games against the Diamondbacks. Both were strong pitching performances. I enjoyed watching the game.

At White Sox it was a totally different game because both the Sox and Tigers offense came to play. It was a high scoring game but all the other stuff just got on my nerves.

On the flip side couldn't you say that baseball started the entertainment blitz? Baseball had the San Diego Chicken and The Clown Prince of Baseball Max Patkin entertaining between innings.

To me though baseball is a different sport. It's a sport about enjoying the lighter side of what's going on. The hot foot, Rick Dempsey's mad dash around the tarp covered field as Babe Ruth and other things like that are entertainment but not some outlandish choreographed show like in football and basketball.
