My son is a Sophomore in SoCal and doing very well with baseball on both HS and Summer Travel. He has gotten attention from scouts and D1 coaches. We have started the process of introduction emails to several schools as we were instructed to do based on advice from coaches. If schools can not talk with a player until after Sept 1 of his Junior year, what happens on the recruiting side with information  they receive from younger players? We get some automatic email replies describing NCAA rules about not being able to contact. We get lots of camp invites. We have gotten personal responses also. But why even approach before eligible if the coaches can not talk about weather or not they will be following you?

While it's true that recruiters are precluded from communicating with your son today, that doesn't mean that they don't want to know of his interest. They'll put him in their database and look for opportunities to see him at camps, clinics, and showcases.

If they are serving as instructors there, they can not only evaluate his playing skills; but also meet him. For this reason, it's often helpful when the player lets a recruiter know where he can be seen, beforehand.

Best of luck to him!

I would suggest that your son go on some unofficial visits in your area. You have a bunch of schools in your area. These visits will give your son some experience talking with Coaches and get a feel of the different campuses, athletic facilities and overall college feel.

If any of the schools you mentioned showing interest are local, then by all means go there.

My son starting visiting schools after his sophomore year. Met with a bunch of coaches and did tours. This really helped when it came down to crunch time. Your son can also call before September 1, they just can't call him back. They can also call his travel coach and request that he call at a certain time so he will answer.

There is a lot of recruiting that goes before those dates if your son is a standout player.
