Son is a senior, LHP. Had interest from 4 local schools that weren't on his list, and wants to go away. He has gone to individual college prospect days, did well, but still didn't get a bite. Yesterday, he received an email from one of the schools he applied to telling him that they would like to see him at their Prospect Day in February.   The email said other schools would be there too.

Is this a money grab?  Is it over for him if he's hasn't gotten an offer from one of his schools on his list? Isn't February a little late for schools to 'sincerely' make offers?

Please shed some light on this.

Thanks

It depends on the school, the email and what year your son is in.  I'm assuming that he is a 2015.  My 2017 receives 7 or 8 camp invites a week.  The majority of these are from schools that we have not had any contact of as of yet and are just money grabs.

We do occasionally receive ones that a "little" different.  By different I mean that they contain a coach's phone number or cell phone number or are worded in a way that we feel are not part of the mass mailings by the schools.  We follow up on those.

The difference being if your son is a 2015 they are allowed direct contact.  Where as my 2017 can only receive questionnaires and "general" camp invites.  I would say if it is a generic camp invite its most likely a money grab.  It is specific to your son and not one of the mass emails then their may be interest in seeing your son.  The best way to find out for sure it to have your son call, or email, the coach and follow up with them.  As he is a 2015 the coach can follow up with him so if they don't answer leave them a message with call back information.

Think of it this way - February is "after" early decision for many (if not most) schools. There's a chance that (a) player(s) that the particular school wanted decided on ED at a different school...   or somehow the coach got an early read on admissions for candidates he wanted that wasn't good...   So coach sets up annual February days in order to be sure he can fill his needs...

So that said - one way to find out - have your son respond to the email and ask the questions he wants answered.  Mine did that for a couple of schools while he was in the process - for those he got a response on, he would know whether it was a money grab or if they actually had interest in him by their response.  No response always meant money grab. I don't think it hurts to say he was at a specific camp so they can look him up... At the very least saying so *and* them looking him up *and* the type of response received will tell you a lot...

At this stage in your son's college search, I wouldn't worry much whether this camp is a money grab.

This is a school he has already applied to.  That puts it in a different category.

Unless he has something else going on that particular day in February that offers a better likelihood of finding a suitable place to play college ball, I'd be at the camp.

Best wishes,

Agree w Swampboy, not many ways for out of state coaches to see him, and this is one, do go.

P have better chance to make good impression at camps, and coach could take interest, ask for his HS schedule and plan  to come see him pitch.

Son should talk to any school who is showing interest, see if it's a good fit, and visit school and check out their academics. One might surprise you.
