It also takes some strategizing about where you want to go, how you're going to get there and what is realistic. That'll take some time, which you have. Getting a list of schools together is a good first step. Making sure that, academically, your high school curriculum is right on target for the admissions criteria for the kind of school you're looking at. Once you have a list of schools that look interesting to you, go to the schools' websites and learn as much as you can about them. It will pay in the long run to have a decent but reasonable list of schools. The shoe-in schools, the "slight reach" schools and the fantasy schools. Maybe a couple of schools in each category.
