I know the Cape Cod league is the one you always hear about, but does anyone know about the others? My son will be playing in the Valley League this summer (New Market Rebels) and i was wondering how the baseball is down there.

Moundmaster - This is a thread that I thought had very good information on many different leagues.

Just remember that there are also many leagues that are never mentioned in this thread or other threads - the "lesser known" leagues, which is exactly where my son is going next summer. It's important that they play as well as the other "fits" of location, etc. It's amazing at the opportunities out there.
Valley League baseball is excellent, and New Market is one of the nicest settings for summer baseball you'll find-beautiful mountain backdrop to the field that is often photographed. Lovely small town support, a couple cranky old timers that don't miss a game and rag umps cleanly but mercilessly nightly, good crowds, great local fans, mothers take turns feeding the team after games, local auto dealer sponsors a "dash for cash", etc. (I had hoped my son was going to play there this summer till the need for additional academic credits signed him up for the "summer school league".)

I attend many of their games every year. You'll love the place and your son will remember it forever. Congratulations!
Hokie,
Thanks for the info... I have a couple of other questions if you can answer..Where is a good place to stay when I come down? Is there an Airport and Motels/Hotels close by? I've heard the players work at the Auto Dealership or a Christmas tree farm.. Do you know anything about this? Where do the players stay? I'm new to all this . Any info would be helpful.

Thank you in advance,
MOUNDMASTER
Players stay with host families; some have kept players for more than 20 years. The team helps find jobs if needed, but many find baseball every night is job enough (with a healthy dose of Play Station after awakening at noon). Some players are hired each year to do field work too.

New Market has two motels within 5 minutes of the field. Best Western is one and I forget the other. Real nice golf course in town 5 minutes from the Park-Shenvallee Golf Course; 27 holes and great dinners on Sundays. Everything in New Market is within 5 minutes of everything else. (But there are McDonalds, Burger King, etc.) Great peanut soup at Southern Kitchen). Soft serve ice cream is walking distance from the field. Get the "Cruncher"-waffle cone, dipped in chocolate, then sprinkled with peanuts.

Best flight is to fly into Dulles Airport and rent a car. It's about 90 minutes to New Market, but Interstate all the way (I-66 W, then I-81S).

I do not exaggerate-it's as good as it gets for a safe, pleasant summer of baseball in a beautiful setting. If you web search "Rebel Field, New Market, Virginia", some stories are bound to pop up; it's been written about in national publications. Try the Washington Post on line, June 2004, for a nice article.

Feel free to PM any questions.
