It sound tougher than it really is ...

Yes, there are rules in place that prevent a D1 coach from having JUCO players playing for him during a summer collegiate league ... that the purpose is the prevent him from having an unfair recruiting advantage.

But very few (if virtually any) summer collegiate teams have paid coaches from D1 colleges on staff. Most of them are too busy (on the recruiting trail). You will find some volunteer assistant coaches (unpaid type) from D1's coaching summer collegiate, but there is no rules against that.

Don't worry about it ... it won't be a problem.

thanks for the reply.last year son had a tryout at the cape for replacement players. only two teams he could have played for.similar in necbl.i think with the rule teams shy away.some have jc coaches but not to many.i wondered what his status would be this year?i sent the ncaa an e-mail. but again thanks for the answer.

just got off the phone with a lady at the ncaa. according to her the ncaa makes no distiction between head coaches or assistants. and she said they do not allow any coach to coach a summer team, that is a recruitment violation.as they could sway kids to switch teams.but she doesn't think the ncaa does any funding to summer leagues any more?and that a two year player can't play for a 4 year coach but doesn't know the tweener status.................wow i was a little confused before now i'm stumped.well back to the rule book.
Since they don't allow any D1 coach to coach a summer team, I guess it's probably not going to be a huge problem with most summer teams.

The NCAA doesn't do the certification anymore. There is a guideline put out to the summer leagues so I would venture a guess that most of the summer teams know the rules pretty well.

Check the roster of the team you are interested in from last year and see if they had any JUCO players. That will be a good indication.
I am not sure the person you spoke with at the NCAA has good information. A quick look at the Coastal Plain League shows at least 7 or 8 D1 assistant coaches acting as head or assistant coaches:

I do not know the rules regarding Juco players. I personally know one Juco player who played in the CPL after both his freshman and sophomore seasons - perhaps it was for a team that did not have a D1 coach - if indeed there is a rule regarding that specific case.

The gal from the NCAA office seems confused and is confusing ... I know for a fact that an assistant coach from our son's college did in fact coach in the Alaska league for a couple of years and a volunteer assistant coach managed a team in LaCrosse for 2 years recently. So something is wrong there ...

Besides, it isn't the coaches who try to recruit transfers during the summer, it is the players who are doing the recruiting for their own teams. chat Lots of conversations occur at and away from the ball park when players express their frustrations with their current situations. Our son witnessed it in Alaska AND the Cape.
JC players can play in any summer collegiate league provided he is not playing for a coach that he will play for at the 4 yr (NCAAA) school.

Kid signs w/ Joe Blow U. Joe Blow U asst coach is coaching in the Cape Cod league. That kid cannot play on that team.

But.....check w/ NCAA before....rules may have changed in past couple of years.
Let me clarify. John Smith is a Soph at Chipola JC. In November of his Soph year @ Chipola JC he signs a NIL to play at U of Florida. U of Florida's Volunteer Asst. is coaching in the Cape Cod League for the Y-D Red Sox that following summer. John Smith cannot play for the Y-D Red Sox provided the U of Florida's Volunteer Asst or any member of that coaching staff is coaching said team. He can if the coach does not return or the kid for some reason doesn't attend the U of Florida.
very confusing, the rules at first glance are clear that a jc player can't play for a d1or2 coach.my question to the ncaa was what is the status of the jc player during the summer between 2year and 4year school.untill he enrolls in the 4year school he is still a jc player.but when she said that no coach can coach other players in the summer as it is a recruiting thing.i told her that as far back as i can remember, coaches have been at the cape and in most if not all summer leagues.i doubt that they have all been breaking the rules all this time. she said she would get back to me.the rule says any ncaa funded program and i think they stopped funding summer baseball awhile ago. but what does that do to the rules?can any body play for any body?this is worse than doing my taxes.it has peaked my interest and will have to find the answer thanks for you guys input.

I think the person at the NCAA didn't understand the question fully.

Right.

Anyway, there was a complete section about the collegiate leagues at ncaa.org.

But, now, it's this.

Summer Baseball Leagues

The NCAA is no longer certifying summer baseball leagues.

I remember reading about this change but can't find the information now.

It may be just MLB sponsored, now. MLB has funded the NCAA in the past.

Not sure about now.

Anyone?

maybe none of these rules apply?this paste was the latest rule i could find, she read from it as well.my reasoning is that you can only play for three years,so if you are limited to who you can play with for two of them, kind of only gives the jc kid one year.or his coach can only market the kid to certain teams?very very confusing but we'll get through it. thanks for your input.
