Augie left his car with valet parking, the valet shut off his automatic lights. Augie left the establishment and was driving down a highly lit 6th street unaware that his headlights weren't on, and got pulled over. The officer asked Augie how much he'd had to drink. Augie told him 6 glasses of red wine, later coo berated by both a waitress and bartender as 100% accurate. Augie was arrested for DUI, and in court pled guilty and accepted and served his sentence.

Everyone I know that has met and knows the man, says he is gracious, honest and a gentleman. He wins baseball championships and his former players speak highly of him. He makes mistakes and accepts responsibility for them.

BrooklynDad, I don't know you, but have yet to meet a person from a shatterproof glass house. Your comments seem quite out of line and make me wonder if there is some other agenda at work (3 posts since 2003 and this is your first post since 2007?)

It is quite obvious that it is a slap in the face to you. It must be quite a feeling never to have made a mistake in your life. I'd love to put your body of work up against AG and see who has achieved more, and helped more young men achieve their life's goal whether in baseball or beyond.
Rob I felf bad for him as well. The kid had been terrific the entire series. It was good to see Coach Murphy talking to him afterwards. Hey thats the thing about sports if your going to compete your going to have some great moments and your also putting yourself out there to have to deal with moments like that as well. I am sure he will be fine.

Quite honestly I have been shocked at the amount of pitches in the amount of time thrown by some of these teams.

CM,
Funny you should mention that, today I checked pitch counts for the week and WOW.
This is a time of year when everyone hurts and aches and pitchers who go this far are extremely tired.
I don't think that sons coaches would let pitchers pitch with tendinitous though, even with good mechanics, that's pushing the envelope.

JMO.
My only problem with Augie was the weak-kneed punishment given by UT, a four game suspension if I recall correctly. A player in the same situation would have likely been booted off the team with loss of scholarship.

But he was a man about it, admitted exactly what he did, was handled in the normal way by the Courts and accepted the punishment, so case closed.

Nothing like the situation with football player, Mr. Stallworth, who bought himself a 30 day slap on the wrist for what would be prosecuted as murder in some states. That one is absurd.

Since metal bats and pitch counts have both been brought up in this thread:

I've never read about this correlation, but wood bats would probably greatly decrease the high pitch counts in college baseball. It seems like this should be a major part of this debate.

BINGO, Blprkfrnks! I believe you have a winna!
But Homerun04 does make an astute observation, also (about the chicks, that is).
Could become a long debate.

You have to remember that many players cannot handle the wood bat. High pitch counts can occur in wood as well as in metal. The overpowering pitcher gets the advantage, and not every team has those type of pitchers.

I think it would be very boring.
I understand the nuances of the game very well sir, and being the mother of a pitcher has nothing to do with my opinion, which I am entitled to express.

BTW, anyone notice, some of the kids who hit the long ball weren't even starters all year. That's what championship games are all about, stepping up when your team needs you the most, because the everyday guys are really burned out, who can be the hero today, that's what I enjoy most in a game.

Notice the pitchers were so tired they were throwing the FB down the middle. oops.

Great game I'll admit, but I still perfer the college game with metal. Many pro wood advocates want to see the college game played with such, you should know that it takes a loooong time to develop with wood, not just in a year of two at college. Some want it that way so every college player can develop to the pro ball level, it doesn't work that way. Half of these guys wouldn't even be playing if that were the case.
Thanx TPM for the super condescending "sir"

And you do not undertstand the game---wood is what baseball is all about not metal---yes many kids cannot hit with wood but they can learn--if they don't they are not a hitter

The pitchers aren't tired--they had the weekend off---why all the excuses--this is CWS time---you can count on all the LSU and Texas players being ready to rock and roll again tonite---
I agree that it takes hittiers a long time to really hit with wood.I am watching woodbat games all summer, and I find it rather boring as well. yes its the game at the pro level when those guys have had years to learn to really hit with wood.I think the college game would not have nearly the fan base if they used wood.Just not the same.I like watching the homeruns and long balls in the college games.
I think we get accustomed to the metal bats growing up.

Fanogame is right.

It is a little frustrating to watch when the players are transitioning to the wood in the collegiate summer leagues. The collegiate games do seem slower. The difference in the sound of the bat coming off the wood is disappointing at first. The difference in the sound affects the fielders as well.

I've gotten accustomed to the wood though..........

Nothing better than a line drive rocket over the fence off a wooden bat..........

The games may certainly SEEM slower, but I was reading the former CICL website last summer, and they had kept stats from their metal bat era and their wood bat era, and there was a significant time decrease once wood bats were implemented.
Most all the players in the college world series have hit with wood quite a bit before going to college. Cameron Rupp in the HR contest at the Aflac Game a couple years ago hit many balls well over 400' with a wood bat.

Wood is used a lot at the very highest level of summer and fall baseball for HS age kids. The best hitters seem to do very well. The metal bat does create more offense, but the best hitters can handle the wood. Otherwise the draft would be even more of a complete guessing game.

It should be a great match up LSU vs Texas. IMO the two best teams in the finals.

I've noticed this as well but the thing that stands out the most for me is how many pitchers are throwing across their body. I thought it was the camera angle at first but after really watching it that is not the case.

In case you don't know what I'm talking about a RHP will have his left foot land on the third base side and work over his body when the throws rather than have the foot land in a line with the plate.

The amount of stress you can put on your elbow by doing this is very great.

Wood is prominent in my area for some top tournaments for HS players as well as being used in showcases and tryouts. My son's first summer league in college hit with wood. Also, there are wooden bat college conferences. Northern KY U and Bellarine in KY play in one. I love seeing guys hit with wood - a great game for good hitters.

He had a HECK of a game.

Even though I want the Longhorns to win it, I was glad to see a local boy do good!

Cool

I don't remember which team took him in the second, but they got a gem! Love his style in addition to his ability!!
