Stadium wasn't good enough for the IHSA apparently, but the NCAA will take it...

SAUGET --College baseball's second biggest event is coming to the metro-east.

The 2008 NCAA Division II College World Series will be held May 24-31 at GCS Ballpark, home of the Frontier League's Gateway Grizzlies. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the University of Missouri-St. Louis are co-hosting the event along with the village of Sauget and the Grizzlies.

"This is huge for us and this area on so many levels," said Tony Funderburg, general manager of the Grizzlies. "The only thing bigger in college baseball is the Division I World Series in Omaha. And from what I've heard, people say the Division II World Series is just one of the coolest events because the kids are here for so long.

That'd be my guess as well. Heaven Forbid A Chicago team have to travel somewhere else for a championship. Was it last year or the year before that Columbia met Wesclin in one of the games? Those two schools had already played each other enough; now they had to travel 5 hours to play! Roll Eyes

Oh well, I think the Grizzlies would rather have the NCAA come in instead and the surrounding economy will like it too! I hope to make a game or two.
