My Son left at 4:30 this morning to head up to his Summer Ball Team meeting in Fayetteville today. I think he is traveling through South Carolina about now. This is his longest solo drive. He meets his host family at 1:00.

We are very excited for him since this will be his first experience with Collegiate Summer Baseball. I understand that they have a couple thousand fans at most of the games topping out around 4000 on July 3 when the team has a fireworks display. All the players are required to go to the right field fence after each game to sign autographs until no one wants anymore.

It all sounds like such a great experience for a ball player. His mom and I will head up next week to catch a few games which begin on Wednesday. Two days of getting comfortable with each other and then game time!

Just got off the phone with my Son to check on his progress. He had stopped off at a rest area in northern South Carolina, turned on the radio and heard an advertisement about the Florence Redwolves and their season opener against the Fayetteville Swampdogs inviting everyone to come out and enjoy the Fireworks. Pretty cool!

Anyone else have their player off playing this summer? I know that there have been threads about Collegiate Summer Ball in the past, and I can't recall anyone not having had a wonderful experience. I am hopeful that my Son's experience as well as any other posters that have their Sons off playing will be awesome as well.

The Journey Continues!

We have been to a Fayetteville Swampdogs home game and they run a first class franchise. The CPL runs their league very similar to minor league franchises and the players in my experience are treated very well. At home, players a provided pre-game meals and on the road, all clubs provide a post-game meal for the home team and the visitors.

One thing that surprised us was the sale of beer at the games. Somehow that did not jive with the college experience we were used to. Didn't stop me from having a cold one however and enjoying the game in the meantime Big Grin
I just finished making airplane reservations for my son to head back to CT for the summer. This will be the third summer of collegiate summer ball and he seems really excited. He will be playing for the Danbury Westerners in the NECBL.

His season ended nearly 3-weeks ago and he hadn't picked up a bat since then until the other day. He met with his HS hitting coach friday and came home with torn batting gloves. To me that is a good sign that he is taking this last summer of ball seriously.

Mine will be headed to Florence after his team is eliminated (or wins) the NCAA tournament. I've heard nothing but good things about the CPL. I'm confident they will all have a great time in Florence, Fayetteville, etc. Only negative is the heat in that area is unsufferable at times. But there's always great BBQ to be found after the games!
Ropepsi,

My son just played in a Memorial Day tournament out in Pittsfield. We played 3 games in Wahconah Park, the home park for the American Defenders. Field was in excellent shape, was re done in the fall. The bleachers are old as the park was built in 1892 but the sight lines were excellent! Park faces West (one of two that still do) so during morning games the sun is right in the outfielders eyes..lol. It is a quaint old historic park. They are still in the process of working on improvements.

Thanks TR. Glad to hear the level of play is heading up. I think everybody's heard about the "Cape League" but never heard much about the ACBL. Can't wait to get started.

The ACBL is one of many leagues that have improved greatly within the last couple of years. It's a great time to be affiliated with summer ball.
In the early stages only question I have at this time is about how the host family senarieo plays out. Is the player obligated to stay there full time? We only live 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. away and Jr. would like to spend time at home after being away at college all year. Also are we obligated to pay host family any funds. We certainly aren't looking for a free ride but we're just not sure how things work. Are there any other hard and fast rules?
