A request to you parents with players away from home in Collegiate Summer Leagues...
Does your player bring a car? Does he need one? Personally I feel it could be a distraction, like having a car on campus.
Thoughts?

My son had his car. I guess it would depend on the team, schedule, location, living arrangements and other factors. He generally had one day off a week and that gave him a chance to explore the area.
Ha...funny, I was planning on researching/posting a similar question, as the check engine light just went on for my HS senior. I keep telling myself it just needs to make it til August when we ship him out, then thought about next summer...
After freshmen year the car goes from college to summer ball.
players usually are staying with a host family... unless they live within walking distance to the fields a car is tough to be without.
son was 1/2 hour away from the field one summer. returning from road trips are also a pain without a car, busses get in late night/early morning. Player needs to be back at field early the next day , etc.
most teams set up players with a local gym membership, getting workouts in was a top priority for my son, being a PO he was on a different schedule than other players so having the car was useful.
Son got assignment to Cape and we allowed him to drive up. He actually took his mom's new car. While up there he started one game and got the call to Team USA and left within a week. They flew him down to Cary and his host family back in the Cape actually kept the car, drove it around the block every once in a while until he got back after the season. He never drove anywhere except there and back.
Mine played in a couple of leagues in New England, including the Cape. He needed his car. When my boys were little (like Little League little), we hosted a summer league player from Georgia. He had his car.
Didn't let him take a car to school, but plan to send one with him this summer and then he'll keep it for the rest of college.
In our league (Valley) cars are very helpful, and with our team, definitely helpful. Going to the fitness facility, early work, morning hitting/fielding practice, late night meals...all much easier with cars. We only have 1 host family that is walking distance to the field. We try to match guys with cars with guys without in our housing but if your son is a non-car guy, have him help out with some gas money. Last summer about 90% of our players had cars, which thrilled our housing co-ordinator to no end.
We have hosted players in the North Woods League for 7 years. Most players bring a car if able, which makes their life a little easier for all the reasons stated above. For those that can't bring a car, the Team tries to get carpools together for players staying in the same area. During times when we had an extra car laying around, we would let the player use it, never had a problem with that.....good kids!
Its a long, busy summer for those players and they need lots of support from all involved.
Son played two different leagues, The Great Lakes and the Valley. He had a car at both. When he was in the great lakes, He ran over something he should not have and broke one of his Break lines. Before I could get over there the host family got it fixed. All I had to f=do was right a reasonable check.
Pretty simple, if he has a car bring it.
