As your sons' look at potential colleges, the common data sets (CDS) have some useful info in regards to entering freshman stats, including SAT/ACT scores, GPAs etc.  Even though baseball may help at some schools, in the admission process, you still have to be in the ball park.  The CDS will give you an idea of that ball park if you go to the First time entering section. It was very helpful to my son.  Additionally, the closer you are to the top 75%, in most cases, the more eligible for institutional academic/merit aid.

JLC,

Good stuff!

The benchmark I suggest families work with to begin looking at possible admission fit is the 25% - 75% ACT or SAT range.  If a kid fits within that range, it's a decent starting point.

Some resources we've used:

Having two boys go through the high school to college baseball process, ACT/SAT scores were far more important than GPA in the coaches' initial screenings of potential academic fit at their schools.  Curriculum, GPA, etc., became very relevant with Admissions, particularly if the coach had little to no pull.

In the world of D3 recruiting, demonstrated interest with the Admissions staff also becomes very important.  Kids need to engage their Admissions rep regularly, just like they would the baseball coaches.  Interviewing, campus visits, meeting at college fairs, etc., are all very important at D3.
