I'm reading Brian Cain's new book "So What, Next Pitch!", and one of the chapters shares the insight of legendary wrestling coach Dan Gable. In the book Gable says "Great coaches get their kids nervous before practice because they know they're going to be put into competitive situations". He also goes on to say that he wants his athletes to go through workouts on a daily basis that are more physically and mentally challenging than anything they will ever face in a match (game).

If you agree with Gable's philosophy, what do you do to make your practices as mentally and physically challenging as possible?

For wrestling, yes.
For baseball, no.

Wrestling is combat.
Baseball is a game.

A local HS baseball coach uses Gable's philosophy.
Trust me, his town's feeder program sends him good talent.
By the end of the season, they're burnt, from his practices.
He'd make an excellent wrestling coach, however, no doubt about it.

I wrestled and played bb in HS. Two completely different mindsets.
