Composite Metal Bats?

I've noticed that many of the new metal bats on the market are Composite Metal. What is the 'advantage' of this and is the performance upgrade worth the extra cost. (Ex. $379.99 for the Louisville Slugger Catalyst vs. $199.99 for the Omaha).
