A recent study of college football players has preliminarily demonstrated that players with concussion show significant reduction is size(volume) of the brain hippocampus in relation to the control population of non-football players. Players without concussion show a reduction in size but not as significant as with concussion.

While the football players did not show reductions in cognitive function for the tests performed, those with concussions showed measurable diminished reaction times.

Clearly, there is much more to be studied.  This report in the highly respected JAMA publication has early, but very troubling findings.
