He is now an Area Scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

He started with a love of the game as a youth and in high school.  He had a fine collegiate baseball career.  He followed that up a with a Master's degree from Georgetown.  He used his baseball background and education to get his first job in baseball as an intern/associate scout for the Washington Nationals last year.  He parlayed those experiences to land his current position with the D-Backs.  Who said you can't make a living at baseball?

Well done Josh - the future is bright!

Thanks, everyone. My time with the Nationals was a great experience… while I wasn't technically an associate scout (my internship was in advance scouting), I did learn a lot and gain valuable feedback from some of the brightest minds in the game. It was an immeasurably wonderful time and I'm really thankful for everything the Nationals' organization did for me. I'm equally as excited to be a part of the Diamondbacks, as the organization has a long standing history of outstanding scouting and a wonderful group of people from which to learn. I can't wait to be able to say that I'm contributing to an organization and learning from such bright minds at the same time. At 23 years old (24 in April), I'm really humbled by the opportunity to already obtain full-time employment and I really look forward to hopefully making an impact.

Prepster- It looks like I'll have to change my hat wardrobe also. These things can get expensive…  http://scouts.baseballhall.org/media/img/scouts1.jpg

Yep!

Just make certain that it's meticulously weathered; so that it looks like something your wife would throw out when you're not looking. ...and, of course, it shouldn't give any hint as to which organization provides your paycheck.

All of this, plus a stopwatch lanyard that hangs precisely 6.2" out of your pants pocket; and you're good to go!

Good for you Josh, I am so very happy for you.  This might make you the youngest full time scout In MLB. I know you will do a great job and I think this will be a step into something very big in the future.

Once someone has seen enough of the best talent things get fairly easy.  In most cases the biggest separator among scouts becomes their work ethic. The harder you work, the better scout you become.  Josh, take your passion for the game and go out there and outwork everyone else.  You will see the scouts that work the hardest and some that don't work much at all.  At some point they might all be working under you. In fact, I think that is exactly what is going to happen. It will be fun following your baseball career.

And for all those that are concerned with wasting your time because of the "odds". It takes a lot more than just the players in baseball. There are many opportunities to have a career in baseball once your playing days are over.

Great thought! I think I would enjoy working in baseball at some point full-time. Right now I'm loving what I'm doing at the high school level, but being an Athletic Trainer in professional baseball can be a great experience. I got to spend a year as an intern with a Frontier League team in college....

Congratulations Josh!!!!  For some reason the other day I went through some of your old posts and reread quite a few of them.  You were so excited to get that internship.  I thought-wow this kid has it going on.  I will say this, your posts show a thoughtfulness and maturity beyond your years.  The D-backs are very lucky to get someone so young and bright.  I only wish my Phillies were talented to see that and pick you up, lord knows they need it.  I say good luck but I know you will work hard and be successful.  Great job.

Agree with every word. Josh's future in the game is especially bright.

By the way, Josh. Will you be working with Howard McCullough?
