Thanks for all the nice comments and congratulations. It was a great day for the Melville family. We were able to muster a few of us for the last minute call-up. I was able to catch the Saturday game and get my bearings. I'm glad I did because the Sunday game went by so fast. I was excited but not giddy like I thought I might be. ( I am having a hard time trying to convey my feelings better. Sorry. Probably the 8+ hour drives to and from are to blame. I'm pooped right now but wanted to say thanks.)

I must say that the Great American Ballpark experience (aside from Tim's MLB debut) was tops. The staff working there are most helpful and friendly. I am really happy that Tim is a part of this great Reds organization.

My sister came up with the idea of the letters that spelled Melville and it was seen on the broadcast a few times. Those of the family that were able to come were a lot more wired than I was but they all echo my gratitude to the ushers, servers and vendors for their hospitality. They really made our exciting day that much better.

For me, the most anticipated part was getting to see Tim's at-bat. It was his first since high school; thank you designated hitter. Since I was overseas during his HS years, this was only the second game I had seen him with a bat since age 13 or 14; the first being PG's Aflac All-American Game at age 17.  I only wish he had been able to get through the first 2 innings with fewer pitches so he could have had another AB and a couple more innings.

After the game we learned that Tim will be up for the foreseeable future. You may be aware of the Reds' injury situation with their starters, so there will be pressure to make room for those returning from the DL in the rotation. The good news is that the manager, Bryan Price said they almost added Tim to the bullpen out of spring training, so he could still stick around at the top for a while.

Thanks again for all your support. The best people in baseball can be found on HSBBW.

Mike Melville

One other thing, The Cincinnati Enquirer ran a story about a condition that Tim was born with called pectus excavatum. It is where the sternum grows inward and can displace the heart and diminish lung capacity.  In the off season he made a video about it with the doctors that developed a corrective procedure.

A family in the Cincinnati area saw the article and contacted the Reds and subsequently Tim. As a result, their affected son will undergo the procedure this summer. Tim made sure the family was also in attendance for his MLB debut and they got to reunite again outside the clubhouse after the game.

That made me more proud than the debut.

Wow!  I was watching the game when I heard about that.  I didn't realize that was your son.  What a proud dad you must be!  I cannot imagine the pride you must have felt seeing him up there.  I also cannot imagine missing my sons games.  I assume you were in the service, so thank you for keeping us free as well!

I'm so sorry I missed this on Sunday!  But congrats, it's been a long time coming!

Midlo Son and Tim were teammates in travel ball and on the 2007 Aflac East team.  Tim was PG's national player of the year in 2007 (his junior year) and, IMHO, the best high school pitcher I had ever seen.  So happy to see the big day finally come!

Tim will start Friday in St. Louis. This is so great for two reasons. First, Tim went to high school in nearby Wentzville. One of his teachers there was Ross Detwiler's mother. (Detwiler was a first round draft pick of the Nationals in 2007 and later pitched in the majors that year. He graduated from Holt HS a couple months before Tim began.) I know that there will be plenty of friends, coaches and teammates in attendance.

Second, and most exciting for me is that Friday is Jackie Robinson Day in MLB. Everyone will be wearing the number 42.  The coolest part is that in 2007 Jackie's granddaughter, Sonya Pankey presented the Jackie Robinson award to Tim at PG's Aflac All-American Game Banquet. It is not only a very prestigious award, it is the absolute best looking one. I continue to think of it as almost a religious icon. It and the association with Jackie is still my best baseball moment.
