On Friday, October 19, Sam Carpenter was inducted into the Abilene Christian University Sports Hall of Fame. Some excerpts from the program:

Carpenter was one of the great pitchers in ACU baseball history. Selected to ACU's all-Century Team, Carpenter was 6-5 with a 2.38 ERA in 1963 and 5-5 with a 2.41 ERA in 1964. He is second in school history with 259 strikeouts, ninth in innings pitched (208.7) and third in ERA (2.59).

His breakout season was 1963 when he finished with a career-high 107 strikeouts in 95 2/3 innigs of work. He threw a pair of two-hitters against Tarleton State during the season, and he beat Texas Tech on April 16. And on May 4, he went the distance as the starter in both ends of a doubleheader agains Trinity University, winning the first game with a four-hit shutout.

As a senior in 1964, he was dominating again, finishing with 106 strikeouts in only 78 innings of work. He had a career-best 14 strikeouts against both Tarleton State and Angelo State, and he also fanned 13 against the University of Dallas in an 18-1 ACU win.

I attended the event and it was quite an experience. Sam's acceptance speech was moving
and he received a standing "o" after he finished...

I played for him 20 years ago and i still ask him for advice on all matters, so do my teammates from that 86-87 team...

I continue to feel that he is the "Dean" of amateur baseball in DFW and all the other coaches and GM's are fighting for second place...

Congratulations on your award!
