Absolutely write letters. First, look at the website for the school and find out about the academics (i.e. does it have a major you are interested in, what are the entrance requirements). Next, go the the team website and read about the coach and, if possible, the roster or media guide (see where the players come from, look at their size compared to you, read any honors that they have received, number of players graduating or playing your position). Also, look at their past record/schedule as well as the upcoming schedule.
If the school has a prospective player questionnaire online, fill it out and send it back. Mention that you have submitted it in your letter.
From the above, you should be able to get the contact information for the coach. Send him a letter telling him a little about yourself (year in school, position, basic statistics). You should also prepare and include a bio (i.e. more detailed information about you (height, weight, high school coach contact info, summer coach contact info)). Also, send him a copy of your fall/spring schedule.
After a week or so, IMO you should call the coach to introduce yourself and make sure he got your information. This is the start of a very long and roller-coaster process, but for someone without a lot of exposure at this point, it is something that should be done. Also, make sure you are aware of the recruiting periods (i.e. contact periods, dead periods, quiet periods) so that the coach can return your calls and either meet with you are talk with you. Right now, most coaches are busy finalizing their top prospects to sign during the early signing period in November.
I hope this helps. Good luck.
