My son received a letter from Cornell College over the weekend atating that they thought he would fit nicely into there plans for next year. Does any one know about this program? Any information would be appreciated.
Best wishes to your son as he considers his college options. Is he an 06 or 07? I'm not familiar with Cornell but it sounded familiar, and I just checked and found that my son's team plays Cornell in mid-March. I'll let you know his impressions after their game, though that might be a bit late for it to matter if your son is an 06.
My son's high school team has 3-4 kids on the baseball team. All the kids were nice players. Academically, the school is on a program where a student takes only 1 class at a time for about 4 1/2 weeks, then onto another class. Something for your son to consider since the format is substantially different than the 4-5 classes taken each semester.
Cornell is a very highly regarded academic institution. It is located in Mt Vernon, IA a nice small college town just a few minutes from Cedar Rapids and not far from Iowa City. They have nice facilities including a great indoor center.
They play DIII in the Iowa Conference which is very competitive. One of the better DIII conferences in the midwest, if not the country.
There baseball program has not had a ton of success in recent years, but I think they're on the way up. They take their athletics and academics very seriously. The Coe vs Cornell football rivalry is the oldest west of the Mississippi.
It's a good place to go get a degree and be a student athlete. As boris mentioned they have been on the Block system (think that's what they call it) One class at a time. Have talked to people who really like that system.
Thanks Everyone for you quick responses. My son has gotten some interest from DIVIII schools and wants to pick one that will work for him both academically and with baseball. Thank you for your opinions on one of the colleges that he is looking at.
