Sitting here watching the ESPNU coverage these thoughts crossed my mind:

01-- It will never happen but it would be great if they had 4 Northeast teams in the Northeast regional--it won't happen because God forbid they have a Northeast Team in Omaha

02-- With all its wherewithall why can't ESPN do as MLBTV does and pop into all the games from time to time so we are not watchimng a 12-0 game in the 5th inning---if the game gets close they can return--MLBTV does a great job of this plugging into the games using the feeds of each telecase--we all know that ESPN has the money to do this--put the Regionals and CWS games all on ESPNU and then bounce from one to the other

03--- The is a NCAA note---why can't they go to wood for the regionals and CWS---the pro scouts are there scouting the kids and it would certainly give them a better idea, just before the draft, that starts Monday what the kids can do with wood---it might also give momentum to the "Move to Wood" concept

But then I do dream a lot!11

That went out the window after the last two times Maine went to the CWS and got smoked. In previous trips they were competitive.

02 Any though to the fact that is is not cheap to have a camera crew at each of the regionals?

03 This is about college baseball not pro baseball, most of the players will not be playing pro ball. Yet the pro guys figure it out for themselves.
A true northeast regional would involve realignment of teams in the various conferences.

At present, I can only see the Northeast Conference, Patriot League and Ivy League that would be representatives for a northeast regional.

The NCAA "Sanity Rule" concerning television coverage of college games seems to have worked to snub the perrenial favorites. (Army vs Navy, Forham vs Yale, etc.)

The Ivy League even eliminated scholarships to entice better athletes to avoid the illustrious eight. (I recall the disaster that became Columbia University Football.) It is one thing to negate the appearance of a lower standard for athletics, but it seems the Ivy League has gone overboard.

The Dexter Manley situation (when he admitted that he could neither read nor write in spite of his years playing football for Oklahoma State University) brought to light that athletics are big money and academic standards be ignored.

So as usual NCAA action in the "Sanity Rule" brought about the insanity of the present day conference alignments.

I'm sure that protocol dictates that Dartmouth send letters of apology to Miami, FIU and Texas A&M for their uncharacteristic outbursts of run production during play at the Coral Gables Regional Baseball tournament.

Since cheering for your favored IVY LEAGUE baseball team is frowned upon I had little doubt that Dartmouth would fail to launch a rally to take the victory. I found it particularly interesting to see that Texas A&M was lulled into a similar malaise of non-scoring and non-cheering.
I was very impressed with Dartmouth. They are a s****** bunch of guys. Very well coached and they have nothing to hang their heads about. The LHP they threw today was outstanding. He has some serious potential. And as a team they really swung the bats well.

St Johns beat UVA in game 1 and that sets up a championship game for Monday in that regional.
Ivy League humor

Since the Ethical Culturalists have infused their mind set, it presents a conundrum how athletics can be fair and ethical while seeking to be successful.

While the Puritan mind set the standard, victory and succes were to be expected as the rewards of proper training and preparation. (If not Divine Intervention)

Coach Whelan and the other Ivy baseball coaches are fine leaders of men and even finer stewards of their players academic and social growth.
Who would have guessed

Auburn taking Clemson to the elimination game

Alabama taking Ga Tech to the elimination game

St. Johns taking UVA to the elimination game

Texas A&M taking Miami to the elimination game

Vanderbilt taking Louisville to the elimination game

Coastal Carolina taking College of Charleston to the elimination game

Cal St F needing to win two from Minnesota to go back to Omaha.

UNC needing to win 2/3 from OK for Omaha.

Several others.

With So Car, FSU, FLA and TX currently in, I don't think I can remember this many elimination games before Super Regionals play.

Coming up huge, stepping up out of the usual role:

Junior southpaw Richie Goodenow, in his first start of the year and just the second start in 68 career outings, held Louisville to only two hits and faced just two over the minimum to lead Vanderbilt to a 7-0 win Sunday afternoon at the NCAA Louisville Regional. Goodenow was outstanding, throwing a career high nine innings that bested his previous high of 4.2 innings set against Oklahoma State in the sixth game of the year.

MN-Mom's Gofers are still alive and will go at it again today. Would be great to see them break through the Cal State Fullerton Juggernaut. New Mexico really impressed me also.

UCLA has finally broken into a Super Regional. Dartmouth is one of the programs talking to my son and they moved up on his list after this weekend. Just shows you that you can be smart AND play s c r a p p y baseball.

It’s great to see all of the telecasts. My son had a double header yesterday and several of the parents were commenting on how good they thought the commentary was. Young guys working their way up who have a lot of baseball knowledge. Much more informative (and accurate) than the ESPN national broadcasts.

RJM - For your information the last two CWS that Maine participated in was in 1984 & 1986.

They did go 0-2 in each BUT I would isagree with your staement saying they were "smoked"??

1984 - Oklahoma State 9 Maine 5
Miami 13 Maine 7
1986 - LSU 8 Maine 4
Arizona 8 Maine 7 (Maine lead this game 7-0)

In 1986 Arizona Won the title and along the way beat Florida State 9-5 and then again 10-2 in the final. I guess FLORIDA State just wasn't competative either since Arizona beat them by scores worse than UMaine!
We all know that the Warm weather teams dominate the College baseball voting/rules committees and believe that even the "worst" warm weather teams are still better that the Northeast's best. A strictly Eastern/Northern Regional was changed due to these types of complaints. To say any of these Northeast teams that made the CWS have not been competative is BS. No Northeast team may have ever won a CWS, but the games have certainly not been such Massacres that they caused the NCAA to make significant bracket changes as your statement implies.

Playing two and heading for the airport is getting smoked. I'm not putting down the northeast teams. I remember when the format was changed. Maine was made the focus as a team that went to several CWS and ultimately was considered noncompetitive by not winning games. A few years earlier they had been competitive in the CWS. You are right about southern leagues think all their teams are better than any northern team.

Basketball uses the "best team" format to their tournament despite having regions. I can't remember if it ws always this way.
To further add! Arizona scored 8 unanswered runs in the bottom of the 9th inning. Dave Shermet hit a 2-run HR with two outs on a 3-2 count to win the game for Arizona.
Coach Winkin who though he had the game won removed his starter and once it was turned over to the bullpen the game unraveled.
So I would say that Maine was quite competative and coulda, woulda, shoulda won but that is baseball! It isn;tover till its over! We have all been invilved in games like this!

True, Byrnes probably talked too much. But this is the first weekend that he's ever worked a game, he was just released a few weeks ago. I thought he was fun for the most part, but I'd have to admit...Kyle Peterson does a great job every year for ESPN.
You are putting down Northeast teams. I disagree with your Definition of being smoked!
Losing is one thing, but losing two ganes by a combined total of 7 runs is NOT being smoked!
Yes, they are O-2 but were not SMOKED! Losing 8-7 to the eventual CWS champion and leading them for 8 2/3 innings is NOT being smoked. This was arguably one of the most competative game of the CWS that year.

For years the Warm weather teams lobbied for the seeded regional format and eliminate the Northeast region CWS qualifier. This further stacked the deck against the cold weather teams, and enabled another warmweather team to have a better chance at making the CWS. We don't need to go into the disparity of budgets, travel costs, weather, area talent levels, scholarship money, facilities etc etc. that the notheast/northern schools have to work against to attempt to level the playing fields. There have been some adjustments to the season start dates etc. (to which almost EVERY warm-waether school complained about!) So the undercurrent for change was not that Maine was 0-2 in the 1986 CWS it was the fact that the warmweather schools always want what is best for them, not for NCAA baseball as an entirety.

I have no complaints with the current tournament format as you still have to beat someone if you are going to be the Champion. I take offense to your statements that the Eastern teams are just not competative or worthy of playing in a CWS and that in itself was the Reason for the format change.

Actually Byrnes has done radio here for a couple of years in the off season in the Bay Area as a fill in on a sports station. May have done some play by play color in the post season. IMO he seems to be fairly comfortable on the air, fun to listen to. Didn't hear him in the broadcast yesterday.

byrnes tries to be a little too cute with his comments . Just said he didnt even know St Johns had a baseball team when told they were eliminated. Not funny, and if he truly didnt know, then what does that say for his job preparation skills! Yikes!

I think his partners squirm when he starts to speak without engaging his brain!

Could be good if he stopped pushing for the "yuks" and relaxed.

I have no idea where you are coming from. If you pay attention on this site you will see I fight tooth and nail on behalf of the northern players. Go take a look at my response in the colleges section to the warm weather blowhard who commented Dartmouth competed due to all their warm players players accustomed to playing against real competition growing up. My son will be playing for a non warm weather college ((somewhere from Virginia to New England). I played in the same conference as Maine in college. I was recruited by Maine. Some of those Maine CWS players were my summer collegiate ball teammates. Some were Legion teammates. I did nothing more than provide the reason universally used against northern teams by the NCAA and warm weather schools on why the change was made. If you can't handle the truth of what was said there's nothing more I can do for you. Would you prefer I lie about what was said back then?
