My son is Juco-graduated and going to a d1 program next year on athletic money. For the past couple summers he has coached his former-HS freshman team, coached for his former travel team (16u and under), and done 1:1 instruction. It’s all cash and good money. Not in any way tied to his NJCAA or future NCAA activities. He’s not advertising his services.

Practically speaking, does NCAA or his next-year school care about this? I’ve read old threads pre-nil and I don’t know if this is absolutely nothing to worry about, something he should call his (future) D1 compliance office about (which could be an annoyance for his d1 coach), if I should get a legal consult from Rick @informed athlete. Kind of looking for the practical perspective here, post NIL.

So I was set to call Rick and decided to give NCAA a shot. They were indeed very nice, and had just one concern: He can't recruit (or create the appearance of recruiting) kids to his future D1. They suggested I call his school's compliance office -- they were also very nice and straightforward. He can't use the school's name/logo/etc. to promote his coaching efforts, and yes he can't be inviting kids to camps or recruiting in any way. They suggested avoiding the school's logo gear when coaching. This all seems quite reasonable and I'm glad I called.
