I'm curious if it's common for coaches to delay the final decision about greyshirting until spring. Former teammate of 2013 is on the expanded fall roster of a very competitive D3, but conference limits the roster number for the official season. This player is hearing from others that sometimes coach keeps the extra players into spring and then asks several to greyshirt just before the season begins.

I would think coach is waiting to see how the freshmen in particular do in their first semester of grades (may lose some just by attrition), as well as their dedication to off season lifting, etc.

I do not think it is terribly common. I guess it could be in conferences that are limit roster size. My son's team has a player that was cut last fall. This fall he has come back and tried out again and made the team. He was a non recruited player though. It was his decision to stay enrolled and try out again.

I know in my area, with the costs of D3's that may be a bit cost prohibitive. Going to a D3 for 5 years can get expensive. Most schools my son looked at only granted scholarships for 4 years. If you went a fifth year you paid the whole amount. Some players get around that by enrolling a fifth year to get a teaching certificate. The cost of a year for a teaching cert is much less expensive.

I guess if you plan to go on to Grad school and you think you can play at a D1 with the last year of your eligibility, I believe when JH was hurt and had to sit out a year, he used his last year of eligibility to play baseball his first year of Grad school.
