I am currently a freshmen at a D3 school. I got a bit of playing time this year but I am thinking about tranferring back home to my local JUCO for my sophomore year. I'm not sure about all the transfer rules and this whole process so I would most definitely appreciate any inisght from someone who has dealt with this whole process or knows anything about it. Thanks.

This happens frequently...although seems like mostly trasfers from D1, but I wouldn't think there woudl be much difference in terms of the requirements. I would discuss with juco coach who should be familiar with all that is required.

Be prepared, juco rosters are often loaded with excellent players when you arrive. Have you also checked out who has been recruited for next year at the juco?

I would have an open discussion with the coach at the targeted juco regarding transfer rules, what your role on the team might be, etc.
Baseballguy,

I will do that, and I know who they have and their incoming recruiting class. However, it isn't the strongest JUCO team out there and I actually was thinking about going there last year and the coach made it clear to me that I would probably been able to start there right away. So I figure I could get more than enough playing time there. Also, would I have to get a release from my current Coach or Athletic Director? Obviously, I plan on talking to my coach at the end of the season and letting him know, but I was just wondering if I had to get a release form or something like that?
Think about this a minute--- D-3 to JUCo for one year of playing

Then you need to transfer again and begin the process once again

You are at a D-3 now with SOME playing time---what is your prognosis for playing time in the next three years---you may be better off in the long run staying where you are---the grass is not always greener at the next stop
TRhit,
I understand what you are saying. However, the reason for tranferring is definitely not about playing time or anything like that. I was actually pretty happy with the playing time I recieved. There are a variety of reasons other than baseball for which I am transferring. The current college that I am at is very poor academically and I worked really hard this year to get good grades (which I didn't do in HS). I was a bit lazy then, but I got it together now. Also, I am a far way from home and I think in the future I would like to live closer to home and there are a few other reasons for which I am transferring. Going into college I was an idiot in thinking everything was about baseball. Luckily, I figured out that other things are pretty important too, and this is the reason that I am looking to transfer.
There are several avenues to transfer eligibility at a NJCAA school, but the simplest is to have a 2.0 GPA and 12 transferrable hours per term at the 4 year school.

After attending the JC, transferring to D2, D3, and NAIA again is easiest if you maintain a 2.0 and 12 hours of transferrable credit. It is all too easy to take JC courses which aren't accepted at the next 4 year school, so be careful.

For D1, you will need to have graduated from the JC, or sit for a year.
