D3 Recruiting

D3 is so varied that it is always hard to give a blanket statement. I do not have experience with commits this time of year to a D3. My son did not commit until May of his senior year. So the coaches all kept in contact until his decision was made.

Some of this may depend on how high a recruit your son is for the program. Is he a top recruit or is he lower down the priority. The coach might continue to call weekly, or he may call less. It may depend on how locked up he feels your son is. Since a D3 commitment is essentially a verbal. He may stay in contact to make sure the son does not flip to another program. If he feels that your son is pretty much locked up, he may call less frequently or not at all and choose to use that time to try and land additional commitments. I would have your 2015 talk to the coach and ask what to expect.

Get your FAFSA completed as early as possible. Also check to see if the School requires a CSS profile. If so fill that out early as well. The earlier they have your financials the better.Academic money at many schools is given out on a first served basis.  D3 coaches lose some of their early commitments after the Financial packages start coming out. When a student starts to see the full freight of what they are going to pay. Many find out that they may not be able to afford the cost. 

I always watched for Baseball commitments to the school my son was interested in. I used Google back then today in Ohio I would use PBR. That way you may get an Idea of the size of the class.

I think you'll find a variety of answers to your question especially with D3 as they tend to be a very broad spectrum of conferences and schools.  My oldest son applied ED to a D1 (which behaved more like a D3 since there is no athletic money offered to anyone) and he heard very little from mid-December until high school was over.  He did attend some college games to say "hi" and watch the team but that was initiated by him. College  coaches are busy with their Spring season and understandably very busy trying to get their guys to win games.  The lack of communication seemed odd to us at the time, but I think this is the rule more than the exception.

Once high school was over, there were a number of emails to the recruited athletes introducing each other, an alumni mentor (in their major) was assigned to each player and a detailed workout routine was distributed to the players.  My best advice is to follow exactly what your son's college coach suggests in terms of getting physically ready freshmen year.  College careers can be made or broke at freshmen Fall workouts.

Completely new to this game, but it seems to me that D3 recruiting is sort of picking up pace now that the most D1 and D2 guys are off the board.  My son has gotten lots of contact in the last couple of weeks from D3 places.  One a flat out "please come and play for us."   Another not quite as strong, but still expressing strong interest.  Is it right to assume that we can expect more of this through the winter?  Also, I also get the sense that there is still some D1 and D2 action out there as well, though far less. 

Yes now that the early signing period is done D3 usually picks up. My son plays at a D3. He had one or two d3's contact him the summer before his Senior year. But the bulk really started in the Fall of his Senior year, then another bump after the NLI. 

I would expect some more contact between now and January. In January new contacts slowed way down for my some, but College visits really ramped up. 

To the OP, I would not expect too much contact, I agree with fenway that coaches will get really busy once the season kicks off, plus for D3's they are still recruiting during the HS season.

Like BLD my son did not commit until late in the process, so to SluggerDad I would expect quite a bit of contact up until he decides.(even after) My son was still being recruited by D1/D2/D3's during Sr HS season, but mostly because he was a pitcher that projected.

Once summer came around my son was in contact with the S&C coach for his summer workout. Like fenway says many college careers are decided in the fall of freshmen year and coming in in great shape helps.

and how do we know how high a recruit he is? Seems to me, if I were a coach, I would touch base (no pun intended!) every so often. Coach told my son he would be getting more calls from coaches. And he has!

Definitely going to file Fafsa and CSS Profile. I have experience with Fafsa but not CSS Profile. How in depth do they go?

PBR is a smaller version of PerfectGame. Started in midwest and really in Ohio is the "Go to" showcase organization. It is growing to I think presense in 18 states and Canada now

Not all schools require the CSS profile. So see if your son's school does. It goes quite a bit more in depth for your Finances. We made a mistake when we filled aurs out and included our House as an asset, ( the directions said to exclude your primary residence). We had to go back and update ours. It made a big difference as far as the Financial need went. 

I would suggest filling it out then taking some time off and then go back and review before submitting. Make sure you save!

Yeah, I review it every Fall before the Fall practices to check out any recruits that OWU received. It does not get all of them but it gets the local kids. 

Yes, I remember the FAFSA being a little nerve- wracking, thanks for the tip on primary residence. How would I know if my son is a top recruit? PG HS commits only list two for this school. I didn't think that was a reliable number.

The tip for the primary residence was for the CSS Profile. Usually you can tell by how the coach treats him. 

Is the coach quick to respond to his questions? Does the coach keep in touch on a regular basis, or is he hit and miss with his contact? With the best recruiters, all the recruits think they are a top recruit. Many coaches will be honest with how they see him fitting.
