I recently learned that my son's school does not have a Strength and Conditioning coach for not just baseball but for any of the school sports (school does not have football).  The students are basically on their own during the winter to workout and improve until practice starts back up in late January.    I was kind of floored and just assumed they would have at least one that handled all sports, etc.  Especially since his High School and all of the Prep schools he was looking at before deciding to go straight to college all had a dedicated S&C coach.

Is this typical of D3 programs?

What are the athletic facilities like?  Some D3 schools have brand new gyms/weight rooms, and some don't.  I would imagine that if they put the money into a facility, they would staff it.

They have excellent facilities, dedicated to athletes only.  A full time sports medicine group (athletic trainers), etc.  Just no S&C coach.

Looking at the staff directories for the division, fewer than half list a dedicated Strength and Conditioning coach on staff.  Some of those are strong national performers while the most notable does not have a S&G coach.

Just was taken aback when he told me they don't have one on staff there and wondered how prevalent that is for D3.

Is it possible they have a volunteer they don’t list. Or did you ask if one exists at all?

It is possible, I am only going on what my son said when I asked him. They do have more assistants than are listed on the website.  But I would have imagined they had a paid someone in an official capacity.  I could ask, but I'd rather just stay anonymous to the coaching staff.  I'm sure if they exist my son will run into them eventually.

In the mean time his PC just set him up to work this off season with one of the starters on his mechanics/velocity and another pitcher to work with him in the gym.  So he is getting support that way.

He also has reached out to a former S&C coach who worked with him last winter but left for a MiLB job, who agreed to put together a program for him for the off season.  So he's pretty covered anyway.

Yes, I agree.  I guess I'll have to look more into it.

I will say this, I want to make sure I don't come off as complaining, because I can tend to be negative even when I don't mean to be..., I had the opportunity to see a practice and then the final inter-squad game to end the fall season and I was very impressed by everything that went on.  And I am extremely critical of things when it comes to baseball.  My son is extremely happy with the coaching he's getting, the level of dedication and enjoyment he is showing has increased and that's pretty impressive to me considering he was already a hard worker.  I don't think he could have made a better choice of where to go to school.
