Does anyone know of a league that uses a fixed darkness rule, such as (a) tested by a light meter or some other instrument, or (b) by timing with respect to official sundown?

If there's some precedent, I'd like to show that to our league bosses. Our rule is the usual rule that puts it entirely within the discretion of the umpire, but we once had a nasty argument between a coach and an ump about whether it was too dark to play, and that was not a good example for very young ballplayers.

Thanks.

I do not know any league or rule in any code that uses any such definitive mechanical or sunset timing measures... This is under the sole descretion of the UIC/Umpires.

Since this s a HS site, I'll quote the NFHS rule.....

NFHS 10-2-3e The UIC has sole authority to stop the game if conditions become unfit for play....

The umpires are responsible for the safety of the participants....and I wont argue with a coach about whether or not its safe to play in darkness....
