Bucknell 7, Florida State 0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)—Mathew Wilson pitched his school-record fifth career shutout and Bucknell stunned Florida State.

Wilson delivered the Patriot League champion Bison (30-22-2) their first NCAA postseason victory in seven attempts, limiting the nation’s top-hitting team to six hits while getting 16 groundball outs.

Florida State (48-11), which entered the postseason with more victories than any team in the nation, suffered its first opening-round regional loss since 1992. That came in a 1-0 shutout loss to Western Carolina.

Bucknell and FSU face off again today in an elimination game, with the winner facing 2-0 Tulane. We'll see if the magic repeats itself.

Funny how things go. FSU comes up empty against Bucknell and then puts up 17 runs vs Florida.

I can tell you one thing, if Bucknell can take a lead into the 7th, they'll be very tough with Jason Buursma on the mound to close it out for the Bison.
CPLZ,
This is my theory as to why they did well with UF and not Bucknell.

Pitching, these players are used to the 90+ fastball. Slower pitching throws them off and sometimes it's tough to adjust. FSU bases their program on hitting and the long ball against top pitching. Same with Miami, #1 team in the country just getting by with wins. I think the same fate met with Georgia the other day.

This is not to take away from any program or pitching staff. But this is often why David beats Goliath. During the year, this type of loss means nothing, now there is more at stake. The NCAA places who they want together, with the hopes of a better outcome for the top seeds to win and often takes hits that the southeast teams get easier teams to play against. It doesn't always work that way.

I am not an FSU fan, so no problem with them having to work hard for it. Big Grin

This is just another example of how difficult it is on the road to Omaha, you can be up all year and in one weekend, whatever the circumstances, you're out. That's why any team that gets to the CWS deserves much respect. It ain't an easy road, even for the best.

Good luck to everyone, those who have players in post play on teh road to Omaha, tell them it's one of the greatest experiences of their baseball lives, play your hardest and help encourage your teammates.
