DBAT Mustangs Head to Farmington

The DBat Mustangs, based in Dallas, Texas, took home the championship in the 2010 Arizona Connie Mack World Series Qualifier. The win sends the Mustangs straight to the nation's premier amateur baseball tournament, The Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, N.M. August 6-13, 2010.

DBAT finished 3-0-1 in pool play, defeating Cherry Creek (CO), Hoots Baseball (CA), and the Dallas Angels. As the 10 team bracket play commenced, the Mustangs exacted some revenge on the Dallas Yankees, who had taken two meetings the prior week in a Regional Qualifier in Dallas, by a score of 10-2. After a victory over the Trombly Braves, the Mustangs would enter the final field of 6 as one of only two unbeatens.

Saturday's showdown with the Arizona Firebirds was a great game, with the Mustangs prevailing 4-3. Later that evening, DBAT would eliminate the AZ Angels White, and Trombly would drop the Firebirds, setting up Sunday's championship.

Trombly, needing two victories, played a great defensive game, and battled against Mustang starter Archie Bradley, a likely 2011 1st round pick. It took an extra inning, but the Braves would prevail 4-3 in 8.

In the final game, DBAT would lose the coin flip (incredibly, DBAT Coach Ken Guthrie was 0-10 in coin flips during the week), but would scratch out a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Braves immediately scored a pair in the bottom half, and then pitching took over. Five scoreless frames later, DBAT would enter the 7th trailing 2-1. The Braves, who had made virtually every play defensively for the past 3 days, suffered a pair of defensive miscues, and DBAT took advantage to score a pair to take the lead 3-2. Duke signee Robert Huber came on to close things out with a perfect seventh.

These were two of the best amateur baseball games I have had the pleasure to witness

Some of these teams got some roster trimming to do to meet AABC CMWS limits.

The Trombly Braves are flying to Seattle tomorrow to participate in the Western Regional. There are some pretty good teams there and we will battle our butts off to get back to the Connie Mack World Series.

If anyone cares, the tournament website is:

The D-Bat Mustangs are a good team and hopefully we get the chance to play them again this summer. If not, I will be rooting for them to win it all in Farmington.
1 more ticket for grabs coming out of the West. Looks like Firebirds and Spokane in championship.

He said "coach", not meeting maker. Big Grin

Thanks Jay. Gonna roll em' out there then sit back and watch. All the teaching is over. Time for the boys to enjoy themselves as a team one last week. Pretty special group. When it's all over for us this summer, gonna be tuff to see these guys walk into the next chapters of their life. I've really enjoyed this club.

4 am in the morning and getting ready for a flight.

Who the hell is the GM of this club anyway?
