GAME 1 -
Houston 9, Dallas Baptist 5
Senior second baseman Ryan Lormand and junior first baseman Jimmy Cesario each went 4-for-5 to lead Houston to a come-from-behind win over No. 2 seed Dallas Baptist.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, the Cougar offense rallied to take the lead with five runs in the fourth inning. After Patriots knotted the game at 5-5 with two runs in the seventh inning, the Cougars put the game away with four runs in the final two frames, including a three-spot in the eighth inning.

Former Grapevine High School standout Trevor Head hit a three-run home run for Dallas Baptist.

Dallas Baptist will play Illinois-Chicago game at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

GAME 2 -
Illinois-Chicago 9, Dallas Baptist 5

COLLEGE STATION — Illinois-Chicago scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning Saturday and went on to a 9-5 victory over Dallas Baptist, eliminating the Patriots from the College Station Regional with their second 9-5 loss.

Dallas Baptist, the first independent to make the NCAA field since 1992, led 5-2 after a three-run inning in the top of the fifth. Ryan Enos tripled and scored on Austin Knight's single, and former Grapevine High School standout Trevor Head and Ryan Goins had sacrifice flies.

Illinois-Chicago used three hit batsmen in the bottom of the fifth to fuel its rally. IUC scored two more runs in the eighth.

So sad.

In Game 1, DBU was leading 3-0 going into the top of the fourth inning, but made three errors, which allowed the Houston Cougars to score five runs.

In Game 2, the Patriots pitching staff combined to hit eight batters, four of which came in the five run fifth inning for Illinois-Chicago.

Those types of mistakes seemed to do DBU in. Was it first-time playoff jitters? Hopefully, the team will learn from its mistakes for next year.

Congratulations to the Patriots on a great season!

I think it was only 2 errors.

The Patriots didn't look intimidated to me at all. In fact, they played pretty descent baseball except for a couple of innings in both games.

In my opinion, DBU didn't have that guy on the bump to shut down a team when trouble brewed.

Getting in trouble will happen, but damage control is necessary.

Regardless, DBU deserves credit for a great season and a major accomplishment.

I think this NCAA bid will help in upcoming recruiting. They have proved they can play with some of the best in the country.

Playoff Jitters do not account for errors on the left side of the infield. Supporters report that this has been a nagging problem all season. 3b posted 23, and SS posted 19 for the season.

Strong hitting can overcome a defensive weakness, depending on the competition, but not usually in championships. I still believe that defense and pitching win championships.

DBU will need to address this if they are to be successful.

Infield 08: There were 2 errors posted in Game 1. The fly ball lost in the sun was technically not an error. You are right, both errors were decisive and helped to knock the DBU pitcher out of the game. There were two killer errors in the 2nd game by the SS.

Good luck to DBU in the future. They had a great run.

Maybe so, I wasn't there.

And don't know his error totals like you listed.

But I will garauntee you this.........

Fortunately, I will go to my grave knowing that I had a chance to coach this young man, and for that I extremely grateful.

You may find errors in his game, but you will find none in his character.

Honestly, if my son turns out to be half the individual this young man is.........

I will be a proud father.

I know his father is proud, and not just biological.

Man up stairs regards,

Ken is absolutely right. This particular player and his family are some of the best people I have ever been associated with.

Game 1 was hard fought, but the multiple defensive blunders were glarring. After DBU took a fortunate 3-0 lead in the first on a 2 0ut 2 strike high fastball that cleared the fence due to wind. In no way did Trevor Head get all of that ball. Houston's LHP dominated DBU all day throwing sliders to righties and changeups to lefties. Don't know exactly, but it wouldn't surprise me if he struck out 10.

The thing that stood out in game 2 were the 8 or so hit batsmen. The error by Austin Knight early in the game wasn't really a huge deal, as it only let in one run and cost Victor Black roughly an extra 6 pitches. Austin will make that play 9 times out of ten, even though it wasn't exactly routine (top-spinning three hopper to the backhand side that rose violently on the last one).

Both games were struggles for the DBU bullpen, which has been pretty good all year. Everything looked a little rusty as DBU had to fight through a 2-week layoff from games due to their lack of a conference tournament.

It was a shame that their season had to end, as they were as talented as 80% of the teams in the tournament. Either way, it was a great season, and I am very proud to be a DBU alumnus.

I agree!!! Guys like Austin Knight and Ryan Enos are phenomenal people, and because of this, they are successful on the diamond, too. Anyone and everyone around guys like these are better for it. DBU did have pitching and defense issues this year, as this thread indicated, but they played as a team and found a way to win much more often than not. Congratulations to Coach Heefner and everyone in his program.

Again, good luck to the DBU Patriots next year and to all their players.

Correct, you didn't question character...

But you did say this.....

I would venture to say that DBU would have never been in the situation to get "killed" if it wasn't for guys like the SS.

You can count errors, 19 according to your stat post, but you can't count what a player does for a team, organization, or university.

I would say it's a pretty safe bet that no how many errors were made by the DBU SS, he will continue to play a major role in the success of their program.

You see, numbers are only measurements for folks to debate.

But the true recipe for success goes much deeper than statistics or "killer" errors as you reported.
