DBU Baseball Team Wins Game One Against Guatemala National Team

9/30/2007

The DBU Baseball Team and 40 DBU students arrived in Guatemala on Friday night. After a good nights rest the team’s departed on their first day of mission work around Guatemala City. The Baseball Team and the Diamond Belles traveled to San Gabriel’s Boy’s Orphanage, who ranged from the ages of 12-18, first thing on Saturday morning.

The orphanage was a life changing experience for the many guys on the team, the Diamond Belles, as well as the boys who live there. Each player and Belle took a personal initiative to interact with every kid, which is something the orphanage boys will never forget. The Baseball Team helped run different activities for the boys, which ranged from, recreation, wiffle ball and a Bible Study, while the Belles took care of the crafts. The children seemed to like the Piñatas the best especially when the candy came out and a dog pile ensued.

Senior Brice Wells said, “It was one of the best days of my life and seeing what God can do with a group of guys who share the love of Christ and baseball. I know the Lord worked through us at the orphanage and what a blessing it was for our baseball team.”

After the orphanage the Team embarked on their second mission of the day, which was a baseball clinic for the little league baseball teams of Guatemala. With over 50 kids showing up for the clinic the team took full advantage of the opportunity to share the love of Jesus Christ and baseball. The team ran several different stations for two hours and concluded the clinic with a short testimony by Senior Brett Lester.

Lester stated “I could not have asked for a better way to start off my senior of baseball then teaching kids my love for baseball and most importantly how much God loves them. It was a huge blessing being able to share a little of my testimony with them today and I am so thankful the Lord allowed us as a team to be able to take part in such a special event.”

Concluding the first day in Guatemala was the first game between DBU and the Guatemala National Team. The Patriots, who are currently in their fall season, competed in their first game of the 2007-08 year, while Guatemala is currently wrapping up their season.
