Delmon is suspended.
Delmon is being Punished for his Action's.
Delmon will pay for this the rest of his baseball career.
Delmon will never be aloud to forget this Incident.
What price should Delmon Pay?
What happen's to Manager's who throw hat's, kick dirt, throw bat's onto the field, water cooler's being tossed??
What Delmon did was wrong.
And he will pay the Price, Ten Fold. the EH

Good for Delmon. I hope he doesn't forget, and I hope he pays for it the rest of his career.
But you know what? None of it matters to him, because he's "special". If he was a 49th round pick out of some tiny D3 that had signed to play for $500 and a bus ticket, he'd already have been released.
However, that won't happen...he's Delmon Young. He's got a few million $$$ in the bank, he's on the verge of getting promoted to an MLB team that's starved for talent or guys not on the DL, and he's got an agent that'll do his dirty work for him, and not only write, but give the apology for his assaulting that pitiful, strike breaking, incompetant umpire.
And best yet, there are people out there that think we're judging him too harshly...
quote:I just hope that none of you or your children encounter such harsh judgement when you find yourself in a situation -- even of your own creation -- where a little empathy and understanding is required
quote:What I am saying is that he should not be judged any more or less harshly than a normal citizen, and, the fact, is he is being judged far, far more harshly here and without a day in court or without representation, which not only is unfair but also is against the Bill of Rights. Moreover, if I did that to you on the street corner, in all probablility I would face probation and if I abided by the probabation, I would get on with my life.
quote:Delmon will make the necessary adjustments to succeed in his career. Delmon is a friend and will continue to be a friend. He temporary lost his focus on his goals.
quote:Do you want him jailed or somehow permanently branded? I keep seeing here descriptions of a spoiled athlete from people who don't know him. I believe that in general that athletics instill positive traits and values. And why should I view Delmon Young any differently than I view the son of any of the posters here, who receive broad support from hundreds of people they will never know?
Comparing throwing a bat at an umpire to a manager throwing a hat, or kicking dirt? That's horse#*#!
IMO - He should be prosecuted for assault.
Forget about the baseball stuff.
He didnt just make a mistake - he committed a violent criminal act. You are not supposed to throw baseball bats into people's chests.
That is a crime.
Let the courts do their thing - and leave him alone.
IMO.

em·pa·thy (mp-th) n.
Direct identification with, understanding of, and vicarious experience of another person's situation, feelings, and motives.
The projection of one's own feelings or emotional state onto an object or animal.
Sorry...but I've been assaulted, and never felt empathy for them!
This "Young" threw his "hissy-pissy" that can certainly be considered assault. In my "judgement", he deserves the suspension, fines and whatever civil charges are allowable by law.
Baseball is no place for that kind
of "impishness".
Simply put - if my son throws a baseball bat into the chest of anyone - he should go straight to jail.
You can all do the Dr. Phil thing later - as long as the bat thrower is behind bars - its cool.

The only time this would be against the Bill of Rights would be if a government entity were pronouncing judgement without allowing the 'alleged' assaulter fair representation in front of a judge and/or jury. Seems to me that Mr Young was the one who was passing judgement and pronouncing sentence on that umpire by taking the 'law' into his own hands and throwing the bat at the umpire. As has been stated elsewhere in this thread, the Bill of Rights confirms that we have the freedom to express these types of opinions, as long as they do not create a situation where another's civil rights are restricted. For the Young apologists, you are entitled to believe that some of us are reacting too harshly, just as I am entitled to judge harshly ... and since I won't be on any jury that would try this case of assault, I can have those opinions without jeopardizing Mr Young's civil rights.
I really think you have gone too far in expressing your own opinions here, jemaz. That is a pretty harsh thing to say to a bunch of people that you don't know, isn't it? And I am pretty sure that those of us who have harsh attitudes towards what Mr Young did would be the first ones to (1) admit we had transgressed in the past and were rightly disciplines and (2) give our own 'progeny' the appropriate punishment and discipline (if they were still
our responsibility) if they were to do anything remotely similar to what Mr Young did. I personally would expect my own adult son to be treated as harshly as his transgression deserved, were he ever to do something like that.
I think I can say pretty safely (as I am sure many other Hsbbwebsters could) that my son ... no matter how much he disagreed with an umpire (and as a pitcher, I think that has happened a few times in his career) ... would never physically assault one because of a bad call. If the umpire made a mistake, he made a mistake, and he doesn't deserve to be mistreated by any athlete, let alone a young one who barely has hair under his armpits. Delmon Young and any of the other kids out there who think they are above the rules needs to learn to let it go. They need to get back in the dugout when their 'at bat' is over, and if they are ejected from the game for backtalking the umpire, they needs to just go take their showers, climb in their Escalades/Hummers/whatevers and go home for the day.
I don't think any of us are implying that he should be viewed any differently ... that is just the opposite of what we are trying to say ... he shouldn't be viewed any differently and he shouldn't be given any more leeway (in his behavior) because he is a top prospect than if he were a 25th round pick who got plane fare and a coupon to McDonalds.
Initially when this story came out and until I saw it on our local sports news, I wanted to give Mr Young the benefit of the doubt as I had heard that he was a decent kid and figured he just let his emotions get the better of him. I didn't realize that he had walked 10 feet away from home plate, that he actually had to turn around to throw the bat at the umpire ... I thought it was an accident while he threw the bat towards his dugout in anger. That is hardly what happened. He needs to be disciplined harshly enough so that he will learn his lesson before he hurts someone seriously and before he becomes a team problem like Milton Bradley was for some of his teams.

Actually, I think Dr Phil would be holding the keys to the cell door ... he doesn't believe in coddlingmisbehaving such behavior in adults or children.

Delmon committed a crime.
Delmon needs to go away for awhile - and when he returns - hopefully - Delmon will stop assaulting people with deadly weapons.

Agree ... didn't mean to detract from the serious nature of the assault with the choice of the word 'misbehaving' ... his anger mismanagement seems rather serious to me to this point.

Put Delmon in an Army uniform and have him join a group of 18 to 20 year olds on tours through the Valley of Death in Baghdad for a year or two. Maybe he'll appreciate his current position in life a little more.
He was wrong. Period. You dont throw bats at umpires.Take your medicine move on. The fact that we have to discuss the where and why shows the mentality of what goes on today.

jemaz - If that was my son who threw a bat intentionally at an umpire, the least of his concerns would be "harsh judgement".
Beezer,
Well Stated!

Very True, Harsh Judgement would be the Least of his Problem.
But would you Forgive Him?
Would you bring it up Everyday that he's at the Ballpark?
Would you make sure that everybody that meet's him Know's he threw a bat at an Umpire?
Is that the Price a Player has to Pay for Making a Mistake?

theEH - To respond to your questions....
But would you Forgive Him? Sure, I'd forgive him. He's my son and I love him no matter what. But that doesn't excuse his actions.
Would you bring it up Everyday that he's at the Ballpark? Oh, he wouldn't be showing up at a ball park any time soon. And when he does return, I don't think he'd need any reminder from me to behave like a gentleman and demonstrate good sportsmanship.
Would you make sure that everybody that meet's him Know's he threw a bat at an Umpire? I must've missed the part where I (or anybody) suggested we paint a scarlet letter on Young's jersey.
Is that the Price a Player has to Pay for Making a Mistake? I'll have to go back and check my post but I'm pretty sure I suggested that Young should be treated fairly and that just because the assault took place on a baseball field during a game, doesn't excuse what happened.
Somebody tried to compare this to hockey but I'm sorry there's simply NO comparison. In hockey as in other sports, physical play is part of the game so there's more gray area. But hockey players have been charged when crossing the line. Just because the umpire was not injured, doesn't mean it's not an offense. That's like saying it's ok to speed if you don't get caught.

Beezer Thank's for answering.
I'm not picking out anything you posted.
Just player's/coaches/People make mistakes.
How long does it have to follow them.
and should they have answer for that mistake for the rest of there Career?

EH,
The answer to how long his mistake will floow him is not up to any of us. How many times do you think the media will bring it up when he finally does get his shot at the Majors?
After his first MLB game, how many times will ESPN replay the bat throwing video?
The media will take care of that part of it.

Gotcha theEH.
I agree 100% that people do make mistakes. My only point was let's hope this young man learns from his before he hurts somebody. I think if HE issued the apology (not his agent) I'd have an easier time moving on. I played sports and have had judgement lapses so I can understand it. And we only saw a moment in time on the video.....maybe Young (off camera) had a look on his face as he released the bat? We don't know.
How long does it have to follow him? That's up to Young. His actions from here on out will determine how long it will follow him.

It will be interesting how he will react to road games when opposing teams have Delmon Young "Bat Day" to all fans 18 and older.
That's good rz...everyone will have to show up in their Sunday finest Kendo garb!
I'm not sure that would be enough to protect them, but it sure would be entertaining to watch!
