i havent seen much of the town its the delta area so very flat. great fan support best in the gulf south (great conf) field is top notch big stadium lots of seating. went to the regional there last year had a good time, coaches are top notch and seem to be very committed to the school. couldn't go wrong there imo!!
I graduated from Delta State in 1991. We took my son to visit a couple of months ago. They have a new million dollar+ swimming facility. Delta State has top notch baseball and coaches. My son loved the school, the aviation department, Coach Kinnison, etc. He is a young 2009 RHP and will probably go JUCO first-Delta State in in the middle of the Delta-lots of humidity and mosquitos-but you get used to it. Are you thinking of playing ball for them?
Sunshinesmom,
My 09 son has been invited to come on an official visit. The coach seems like a nice guy to my son and the team seems to be a winner every year so we plan on checking the school out. Are there a some things to do in that area? We are from a small town just outside of a larger town of about 65000 pop. so we don't mind a small town setting.
It is a very small town and seems to be in the middle of nowhere. We are right outside Memphis and it is a straight road from here to there. The town of Cleveland has your typical restaurants. I would say there is about 15000 in the town and about 5000 at the University. It is a great school. Everyone is so friendly. Football and baseball games are fun. They are in the process of tearing down and building new dorms. The only complaint my friends and I ever had was that we were from a part of Mississippi that was about 3-4 hours away and it was to far to go home every weekend but most others did go home so the weekends were quiet and boring. I guess now we should have used that time to study!!
I still have the kids names that showed my son around-I'll be glad to pm you their names. My son had a good time when he was away from us and with a couple of students that showed him around for a couple of hours.
Sunshinemom,
Just got back from Delta state and you weren't kidding, it's a beautiful campus with a coach and team that takes a lot of pride in their status as a DII powerhouse. Son loved the place. Would have never thought we would drive 580 miles each way to look at a school when there are so many good ones here in Texas but I'm glad we did. Also everyone in Miss. seem very friendly. Must be that Southern hospitality!
Hey Three,
Sounds like you guys had a great trip. You can tell they are very proud of the baseball program. Did you meet Coach Kinnison? The funny thing about Delta State that they may have told you that years ago when another coach was there John Grisham tried out for the baseball team and was cut. He spoke at the school a few months ago for a baseball fundraiser and that story is just funny. What is the next step now? Think your son may end up at Delta State? Did you bring any mosquito bites home?
Sunshinemom,
Yes, we were taken around by Coach Kinnison and shown all the great facilities. Apparently that story about John Grisham is true although he must not have taken it too bad since he is a big contributor to the school and program. Sounds like he didn't let being cut ruin his life! We watched a
fall intrasquad game and went to a football game. My son was really impressed with everything about the school and it is very high on his list. There were some mosquitos but right now we've got our fair share at home. I honestly have a good feeling about Delta and the atmosphere there. I love a school that has a "baseball tradition" and they certainly seem to have that.
Coach Kinnison is great-he has very high expectations of his players. My son always thought I was joking when I told him they were the "fighting okra" and my husband is from Michigan and he didn't believe me either. The last time we went my son got one of the "real" fitted baseball caps not the ones they sell in the bookstore. It's amazing what it important at 16. I think John Grisham did just fine without being a Statesman!!
Keep in touch and good luck!! My son was impressed with the aviation department until he saw the curriculum-ha
