Denton wins in 10

FORT WORTH -- Denton persevered through its mistakes and captured a 5-4 win in 10 innings against Fort Worth Western Hills on Saturday in Game 1 of its Class 4A Region I bi-district playoff matchup.

"That was a tough game. Both teams wanted it real bad," Denton head coach Marty Green said. "We got out of some tight jams. We played with a lot of emotion tonight, and that's what pulled us through."

Denton scored the winning run in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Miles Mulkey to right field that scored Colton Nolen.

Western Hills threatened in the bottom of the 10th, as it had runners at third and first base with no outs. Denton pitcher Abel Baker, who relieved Mulkey after the starter lasted six innings and allowed four runs, shut down Western Hills by striking out the final two batters to end the game.

Western Hills (17-14) tied the score in the bottom of the seventh inning after Ryan Stuck led off with a single and moved to third base on a pair of passed balls. Stuck scored on a ground ball to shortstop.

Denton (15-8) jumped ahead early with three runs in the first inning after Christian Perry led off with a double to the gap in left-center field. Perry also hit a home run to lead off the fifth inning.

Stuck, the starting pitcher for Western Hills, struggled with his control in the first inning as he walked two batters following Perry's double to load the bases. Stuck then had a hit batsman that scored Perry and allowed another run on a wild pitch. Denton's Hunter Dozier had an RBI groundout that scored the Broncos’ third run of the inning.

Stuck managed to regain his control late in the first inning, as he struck out two batters to end the inning.

Mulkey was untouchable though two innings, striking out four of the first six batters he faced. Mulkey had seven strikeouts in the game.

Western Hills scored runs in the third and fourth innings to cut its deficit to one run. Perry, however, answered for Denton in the fifth as he drilled a home run to left-center field.

Game 2 of the best-of-3 series will start at 1 p.m. today at Bronco Field, with Game 3 following if needed.

As the playoffs roll on, our Denton Co. teams continue to represent...Krum(2A), Sanger(3A) and Ryan(4A) are still playing. I think the volunteers at Denton Boys Baseball, Inc. and all the daddy coaches along the way deserve a collective pat on the back. I know 3and2 Son got some good instruction from Roy Greenhaw, Hal Evans, Mel Knight and Pat Burns. We are trying to enjoy every minute. I hope all of you can do the same. Good luck to the 32 teams left in each division. All of us have worked hard and sacrificed much to get our boys here, and man is it ever worth it!

Congrats to those teams! I read where Sanger set a school record this year for wins.

Anybody know what happened to Joe Staley, player from Decatur who was with Grayson County JC?
Watched Grayson County play last week and he was on the roster but not with the team.

He just signed with Stephen F. Austin last week. He played some at Grayson, but an older guy transferred in spring semester and got the start. He and my son will be roomies next year at SFA.
