On my son's college team the regular shortstop has started four games as a pitcher. He bats for himself as a pitcher; and when a new pitcher enters the game, he (the starting pitcher) continues to hit in the same spot in the lineup and is then listed as the dh. (He does not play a position). I was under the impression that a team had to start the game with a dh in order to be allowed to use a dh. Could someone clarify this for me? Thanks.

Pirate fan is absolutely correct.

This is an NCAA rule. The NCAA DH rule is probably the most confusing rule difference that I know of.....

But to your question....

NCAA rule 7-2c

If the game pitcher is not the DH, when he is replaced by as the pitcher....

1. On offense he may become the DH and bat only in the DH spot.

Now to your second point.....starting the game without a DH...this is where it gets tricky....

In NCAA rule 7.2b if no DH is listed the pitcher is automatically the DH and will be considered 2 players. Such a dual player is known as the pitcher/designated hitter or P/DH

Hope this helps...
