I am just about to lose a bet with my son and he is going to get the bat of his choice for his travel ball team. When we went to the local sport store, the clerk had him measure his arm, height, do arm circles with the bat etc... Now in my day, we just picked one that was comfortable. Is there a method to this madness? If so, suggestions and where is the best place to purchase this bad boy?

I take it he is not in HS, -3 restriction on weight difference. I like to have the batter be able to hold it level with the bottom hand for a count of about 15 minimum 20 maximum without having the bat head drop. i don't think about length so much unless I am looking at small barrel bat. Full Barrel 2 5/8 of Big Barrel 2 3/4 I consider length and weight. My 11 year old swings an Easton 777 30 inches long 21.5 oz, Under load bat is a 19.5 oz and overload is 23 oz. near same length. Most of my 11 & 12 year old team swing 28 to 30 inch bats weighing 20 to 21.5 oz. Hope this help.
Very good explination HotCornerDad. I'd add that holding it out means, out at arms length palm down...
Have you ever noticed that it seems like that no matter how much you spend on a bat or how new it is, everyone on the team wants to use the one that got the last hit?? Big Grin For that reason I'd suggest if all things are somewhat equal and the one he wants is a few buck more, get that one. Hitting is so mental let him go up there with all the confidence he can.
That will depend on how the bat feels in his hand, the weight balance is different for each of the bats named. The same weight of bat will fell different. My oldest like the Omaha, Middle Easton, Youngest Demerini. Go Figure. FYI all of these have changed at least three times biglaugh

One last thought, consider a bat with similar dimensions as the one he used to pop the two over the fence.

If it's shiny and new, I want it! Big Grin

Hmmm... I just bought my son a new 30" bat. For the past 2 years, he's used a 29"/18oz. Easton TriShell. But I recently found out that another player (a very good one) is about 20lbs heavier and several inches taller, but only uses a 31".

I forgot to do the "hold it out" test, but we haven't opened it yet. But he's been swinging 2 other 30" bats (Anderson Pyro demo program and a Laser) in practice for several weeks, and he seems to handle it.

But before we crack open the seal on the new one, I'd just like to get some feedback. Sure he'll be able to swing a 29" a bit quicker, but will it make up for the loss in plate coverage, and is it necessary, seeing he appears to be right on the edge of "ready for a 30"?

From the charts:

Age (11 in late July)
10 years old 28"-29"
11-12 years old 30"-31"

Size (height ~53-54", weight ~80 lbs)

53-56"
71-80lbs 30"
81-90lbs 30"

Thanks,
Sandman
When I played LL ball the bat size and weight did not matter to me.Most bats will be under 21 onces now a-days.I swung a 31"20 from ages 9-10, and from 11-12 a 32"21, but then my bat cracked and I used a size 29" bat for the last three games or so. If he's swinging a 18 once bat and he moves up to a 19.... its both really lite for a bat. I think I was once on Kevins team? Does he play in Westwarwick?-
Yes the -3 has to hold at the HS level but the bat must feel good to batter--- measuring height weight etc is fine but two kids may not want to same the bat because it does not feel comfortable to both boys--- the batter and his bat need to become "one" during the swing and that feel can ONLY be determined by the one swinging the bat
