Can someone clarify this situation which occurred today in a Pennsylvania high school game?  The other team was batting a DH for their third baseman.  In the middle of the game the DH hit a double.  The team then pinch ran for the DH, USING THE THIRD BASEMAN FOR WHICH HE WAS HITTING AS THE PINCH RUNNER.  Later, when that spot in the batting order came around, they "re-entered" the original DH to hit stating that they were allowed to do that with a "starter."

Was this correct?  (The umpire allowed the re-entry) I argued that both players were technically starters and that once the fielder entered the game as a runner, that the original DH should have been finished and not allowed to re-enter later and hit again.

Thanks

The umpire was correct...

Think of it this way:  Both the DH and the guy he is DH'ing for ARE starters.  Which means they can EACH come out of the game one time and re-enter.  The DH got his hit and came out of the game for a PR (doesn't matter who) and then he can re-enter.

The kid being DH'd for never left the game; he just came in to be a runner. He was never replaced.

So actually you could still pull the DH and let the kid being DH'd for hit.  AND...you could replace the kid being DH'd for by someone else and he could STILL re-enter.
