For Div 1 teams with drafted players who are going into this weekend's Super Regionals and (hopefully) Omaha, is the MLB draft a distraction? I've wondered about the timing since last year when there was some scuttlebutt (alleged) of some players (including a first round pick) going out drinking the night before an ugly loss in a Super Regional. Seems that, for some anyway, being drafted would make it difficult to concentrate on the task at hand.

IMO, at that level and with that much exposure, most players should be able to handle that sort of pressure and distraction. After all, if they're 1st round picks, couldn't they possibly be playing in the World Series in a few years? That makes the pressure and distraction of college look miniscule
Just to add on to the previous comments, I know if I was a player I'd certainly try to use it to my advantage. I honestly believe that in order to be a good player there needs to be arrogance, you need to know inside yourself that you are the best out there. Being drafted like that would just solidify that status even more. Some might think "Oh well now that I'm a shoo in professional I don't need to work anymore." If the player is legit and deserves the accolades he gets by being drafted, he knows the hard work it takes and will work that much harder to prove to those that matter that he can handle and live up to whatever expectations are put on him
I guess I have a different view.
I have a hard time believing that over 50% of the players drafted weren't 100% absolutely focused and hoping beyond hope it would happen. Is that a distraction? Well for 1-2 days, to be honest, I don't see how it cannot be.
On the other hand, most all of the players drafted have a unique ability to focus on the task at hand. That is one of the reasons they got drafted. Cool My view is these players have the ability to absorb distractions and then refocus on the task and hand. Just like they forget the game yesterday whether it was 4-4 or 0-4, they do the same with the draft. It was at minimum a 2-4, at best a 4-4, and they have all done that before. You don't get many chances to compete in a super regional. Is it a distraction on June 6/7? Yes. Is it still a distraction on June 9? For some, maybe, for most, not a chance.

My son told me that on his team no one talked draft at all, the focus being getting to the next game.
I heard an interview with Tyler Colvin and he pretty much told the reporters his focus has been on this weekend, and his team and Omaha. Very mature and realistic young man, I am not a bit surprised he was drafted so high. But I do not think he even expected to get drafted where he did, so I am thinking maybe there were not too many distractions for him as some others.

Teams have curfews, at home and on the road. They are expected to adhere to it. If players are out partying before the big game, I am wondering what they learned from the whole experience of working hard to reach a goal and blowing it because you did soemthing stupid. I am wondering if the coach has done his job of teaching responsibility and the importance of teh season.
