My LHP son recently verballed to a Pac-10 school. Prior to that, I spent some time doing both internet research into the subject and attending games to see live pitches while watching the radar guns.

The answer is.. not as fast as you might think. It was quite common to see lefties cruising 83-85 on the Jugs. If you are an upper-80's LHP guy with quality stuff you have what everyone's looking for.

BUM I agree. If you listen to some games on the internet you will hear speed stated by many announcers. They often refer to soft thrwing lefties and with FB sometimes even lower than that.
I remember listing to one of my 1st college games and a nuber 1 ranked school had a guy they referred to as a soft throwing LHP. He was in the low 80s.
You have to be able to get batters out.

mstcks,

Great attitude. Of course you have a chance, you're so young! If you're willing to work three times harder than everyone else, anything is possible.

My LHP son long-tosses 5x week YEAR-ROUND, lifts 3x week (not during season), does band and core work and plyometric training. He is a 5'10" Junior and now throws 88 on the Jugs (86 Stalker). He was at about 79 when he was your age. So you're right there!

Believe, plan, do.
Not to disagree with anyone, I'm just going to point something out. A lefty usually has a natural tail to the ball (or movement on their fastball). This is key in allowing them to not needing to throw as hard. A lefty with a straight fastball may need to throw harder than one that has tail. In college, hitters can hit most speeds... movement is a great thing.
